What's wrong with my 03 Bayliner 265? Go!

My husband and I made the bad decision to buy a 2003 Bayliner Ciera 265, from a broker, without getting it surveyed first. We basically walked into this boat blind. When we test drove it, it ran fine as they always do.. Here's a little info about it. It has around 100 hours on the motor and it sat in brackish water for a couple of years before it was drystacked. The anods were eaten off of the areas near the motor and there was a bit of corrosion on the outboard, etc. I think the boats main issue is the lack of use that it received over it's life. It did receive regular maintenance though.

On our first run, after it was purchased, the boat didn't have power half way through the throttle. If it was in WOT, it had half the power. So we took it to a marine mechanic who rebuilt the carborator, changed the bellows, fixed the exterior of the outboard and repainted the bottom of the boat. When we took it on the water after it was fixed, it ran well, although the RPMs didn't go to where the engine said they should be, maybe a guage issue, maybe something else, idk. (I'm not sure the exact RPM info.) Anyway, we took her out several more times after all this with no issues until yesterday. On the way to the boat ramp, our trailer had a blow out. The husband called from the side of the road, I went and bought a new tire, we were back en route within 45 minutes. We get to the landing. I back the trailer in the water, husband tries to start the boat and nothing but click, click. He had unplugged all the batteries prior to this boating trip so they shouldn't have been dead. So, he fiddles with the wires and the engine starts up. He gets the boat into the water, my parents, my baby and I all board the boat. As we go to take off, the no power issue is back. We're WOT with half the power. Husband puts it in neutral, revs the boat, and it revs fine. Back in drive, no power. Oh, and what's even better, there was a strong smell of gasoline in the cabin area. So, after 5 minutes on the water, I get the truck and we get the boat out of the water and head home.

So, what the freak is going on? I called the mechanic and he said to bring it by next week. But, what do any of you have any ideas of what might be going on?

This freakin sucks.

Thanks for reading.

What engine do you have, Smidgy? Sounds like it has a dead cylinder or two. That would rev fine with no load (in N).

You say that you test drove the boat and it was fine . . .

So, I assume it did not have the power loss issue then?

Aren't boats fun ??? The problem will be if you rely on the mechanic, you could spend tons of money and not see proper results. You may have to look into these issues yourselves. I would start by checking all of the electrical connections, battery voltage etc. You will have to go through many things to get a 'baseline' of the boat's condition and do process of elimination. All to often we see post like yours where some thing is fixed that seems to resolve the problem for a short while, only to have the issue return. It generally indicates that the problem(s) are not fully understood.

Make sure that you are running the blowers when you use the boat, if you are not doing so already, particularly with that gasoline smell.

Without speaking to the husband, I believe it has the Mercruiser Bravo 2 with the smaller engine. Lol, yeah JB, boats are great. What sucks is we had an awesome 2002 Bayliner 1952 Cuddy that always ran perfectly - we never had the first problem with the boat. Then my husband got a wandering eye and we sold the smaller boat to get the bigger Bayliner and here we are today with a boat with crazy issues. Tpenfield - where would we even start to get a "baseline" of everything? Btw, we always do use the blower as we should. Do you guys know why'd there'd be such a strong gasoline smell. I first wrote it off that it was because it had been closed up for a few weeks, but after we let it air out overnight the smell was still there...

If you still have gasoline smell, then there is probably a leak somewhere. It could the a fuel line, a fitting, or the tank itself.

I just upgraded boats myself. . . had the survey, etc, which gave a good indication of the things that needed attention. I then went through things myself over the course of the winter and found a number of other things that should be fixed.

I also wanted to do some upgrades before putting the boat into use. I checked every system and aspect of the boat that I could think of . . . and actually had a few things craap out on me along the way. I think I have about 220 hours of work into it since September. I can send you my list in a Private Message, if you would like. It may give you some ideas. Fortunately, the engines are/were working OK, but who knows what will happen when I put the boat in the water.

Also, JB, what would a dead cylinder all entail? I'm guessing a good bit of money, but what else..

Tpenfield, when we test drove it, we didn't notice the lack of power issue then.

Yeah, please pm me the list. Do you guys think we'd benefit from a survey at this point, just to find out what all needs to be done to the boat? It'll probably make us sick, lol, but at least everything will be known.

Yes, maybe a survey . . . it would be a 'post-purchase' survey.

I'll send you my 'list'
