What's your favorite fluid transfer pump?

In my SeaRay, I've always drained the oil from below since I can access the oil pan drain plug without much difficulty. On my "new" project boat it's much harder to get access, so I'm looking for other options (through the dipstick tube I imagine). I will also be draining the velvet drive transmisison (I assume through the fill hole, since I haven't discovered any type of lower drain plug on it). What do you guys use for fluid transfer and where did you get it? Cheap is good since I've got a long restoration ahead and I'm keeping an eye on my spare pennies. Thanks!

Re: What's your favorite fluid transfer pump?

chuck; i use the purpose built quick silver one. i paid around $13 for it at a mecruiser dealer. it is a brass tube with rubber adapter caps on each end. one end has a fitting to screw on to dip stick tube and the pump handle out of the other.

this works ok for me. make sure the motor is warmed up to operating temp when changing. my complaint against this suction pump. the seal around the pump slider rod that goes thru the rubber isn't very good and drips oil. i have to keep a rag handy to keep the drips cleaned up

I did the same one and took it a step further.....

I also permanently installed a drain hose similar to the one below from Overtons (in fact mine came from Overtons)

Putting it where the oil drain is allows you to get it all.

I then use the Moeller vac-pump to suck out all the oil.

Takes about 15 pumps of the handle and the oil is sucked out in about a minute flat...... Hot or cold makes little difference.

The drain hose does not fit thru my transom drain (I has a check ball in it for that time when I forget to replace the plug!!! ) and I don't have to crawl in there to handle it or try to fish it thru the drain hole and then wait for ever for the oil to drain out via gravity.....

The end of the hose is clamped to my port side riser so all I have to do is connect the vac pump to it when ever I want to remove the oil.

I also don't have to cram a tiny plastic tube into the dipstick tube and then sling oil all over the place when removing it!

Your results may vary.....

Rick

FYI....To drain the oil from a Velvet Drive you go to the hose which is connected down low on the starboard side and disconnect it. Then you remove the fitting it was screwed into from the case. Some then have a screen in them while others have a tube with a slot cut in it. During reassembly the tube goes in with the slot facing down. If you would like you can PM me a email address and I would be glad to send you a copy of the page from my manual showing fluid change on a Velvet Drive.

I have the same "Topsider" as Woosterken, and I don't why I waited so long to buy one. Pump it up, position the hose, open the valve, wait 'till it gurgles.

I use it on the car and truck also, the first couple of times, I double checked by pulling the drain plug afterwards, and only got a dribble. So, it did a pretty good job.

i picked up one of these...........

http://www.northerntool.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/product_6970_390306_390306

there was a discustion on them here a while back and every body said they are top notch
i have not had the chance to use mine as of yet.

woosterken

Ive got that one and it works ok. The first section of the hose was fairly thin so it would suck together. The 4 foot or so section coming right out of the container was smaller dia and thicker so it works fine. Not sure why it changed to the thinner hose. Other than that it works pretty good. Gotta pump the heck out of it though.

Re: What's your favorite fluid transfer pump?

Thanks gents, a bunch of great options. This being a project boat in more or less unknown condition at this point, I'm anticipating an engine replacement anyway (it currently has a FWC Chev 350). For now I'm just looking to pickle the engine and transmission by sucking out whatever oil (or water, or whatever else comes out) is in the pan and run some penetrating oil through them in the off chance they can be salvaged when I get that far.

Jim, thanks for the offer of the Velvet Drive manual, PM sent.
