Re: whats your opinion on this boat?

The only way to tell if a boat is a good buy is to climb and crawl all over every inch of it and make some educated guesses at best, unless you are a Certified Professional Marine Surveyor and do this for a living...

Certain tell-tale signs are soft decks or transoms, these usually will indicate some serious amount of work is required...

If the boat has lived outside, uncovered most of its life, it is a pretty good bet there are rot issues deep inside the hull requiring a full gut job and complete restoration.

Without a careful, hands on evaluation, no one can realistically tell from pictures if a boat is a good deal.

While the cost of materials can run anywhere from 2-5 thousand dollars for a complete restoration, the actual labor you will put into it may well never be recoverable...

For that kind of money you can buy a very good water ready boat...

Most of the boats that get restored on this forum are done as a labor of love, not profit...

Never a good idea to buy a boat that needs a restoration and plan on making a profit on it...or so I have heard...

If you decide you want a project, and are ready, willing and able to take on this kind of project...you will find that all of the information you will need is available right here, from a ton of really knowledgeable folks...

Best of Luck.

Have you actually seen the boat in Person? What kind of powerplant is that? I'm no expert but I Think is may be an Old OMC. Those are hard to find parts for and not very highly desirable. For all the reasons listed above you should really think hard about this. If you've spent any time at all on this forum you know how much work these restorations can be.

If you're handy, have the tools, space, want a project, and want a boat you know every inch of that'll last - then it's a cool looking boat to do. If you just want a cheap boat to get you on the water then you'd better have a look at it in person and go over it with a fine tooth comb because cheap boats are cheap for a reason.

PS- Having just looked at 74bayliner's thread it looks like his which I think is a Volvo/Penta.

Re: whats your opinion on this boat?

yeah....i think its a volvo......but i dont like the fact that the carb is on one side while the mainifold seems to be gone on the other.

first off.....getting the motor running will take serious dollars.....try 2k.

second,,,,,the hull will be another 2.5k

the max a boat like that will sell for is around 2.5k

restoring boats is not something you make money off, unless it is the right boat, at the right price, and the motor and drive is fully running.
there is more money in fixing hurricane boats than restoring old ones.

the reason we restore our old ones is because we have some kind of attachment to the boat, or we want a project.
as far as dollars go.....well we get our money back when wd splash the yacht, and know its safe.

I have learned to be leery of any boat for sale with new carpet, they are usually trying to hide something.

Outboard boats are easier to restore than I/Os, and Aluminum boats are easier to restore than glass.
