Hi,

I'm trying to change my wheel bearings ( i noticed a screeching noise in one). Now I removed the cap, split pin, nut and washer. However I cannot remove the hub, it just won't budge. Have I missed something or do I need to approach this in some other manner?

You have got everything removed...next step is a piece of a 2x4 on the back of your rims.

Happy boating!

First of all... misguided percussive maintenance will complicate your problems. It sounds as it the bearing race has become married to the spindle. This is probably due to a bearing failure and subsequent galling of the two. I would screw on the nut until almost flush and use a five pound BRASS hammer (or dead blow) and give it a couple of square licks. It would be my guess that the outer bearing will start to pop off and you might be able to coax it off. I don't really see much in the way of bearing failure on the outer bearings, but looks can be deceiving.

Then, I would obtain a hub slide hammer. Fasten it to opposite studs and start wailing away.

If all else fails, I would put the nut back on to almost flush and pull the trailer and see if the heat generated by the bearing pulling would loosen it enough to break free.

If you CAN'T get it apart, a spindle and hub are in your future. Even if you do get it apart, you still might need a hub/bearings and spindle.

:(the inner bearing cone on the outer bearing might have gotten over heated and froze to the spindle shaft of the axle- i sure hope not, cause sometimes its very difficut to get it off,I've had it happen before and had to use heat and a very big hammer and sometimes it got down to a cutting toarch and chissels- just don't scar up the spindal. GOOD LUCK!

Re: UPDATE: wheel bearing issue.. ( photos)

thanks Guys,

I didn't want to start beating at it in case I did harm. I'll take the advice and see how it goes . cheers.

UPDATE;

Well went with the block of wood and small sledge first , and after few large taps off the wheel came.
The inner bearing was thrashed and it was this that was holding it on so tight.
Changed both sides so am good for another while.

Thanks for the help guys

It appears this trailer doesn't have brakes, but if it did, the shoes on worn drums can prevent hub removal until the adjusters are backed off. But, like the others suggest, the outer bearing is likely stuck on the spindle. What you might try rather than brute force, is to loosen the spindle nut about one turn and insert the cotter pin. Drive around the block a time or two (slowly please), turning different directions or getting a little sway going on the trailer. Then try to remove the hub. The sloppy adjustment may loosen the bearing.

I had to look that one up! :)
I'm way new to boats, but was a professional mechanic most of my life (69-99). Earned master certifications in both Automotive and Diesel. I have seen people bugger up more stuff and then expect me to fix it for free! Its a three part caveat that most mechanic wannabes go by:
  1. If it doesn't fit: force it!
  2. If you can't force it: Use a hammer!
  3. If a hammer doesn't work: Use a BIGGER hammer!
That being said, I left the automotive industry in 99 to be a Network Consultant. Y2K was an awesome time to do it! :D Percussive maintenance was the term given to users who would hit their PCs in hopes that it would fix the problem. It never did and its always been fun to watch them work out some frustrations on an inanimate object. It was during this time that I discovered the I-D-Ten-T virus that has infected a good portion of our population. Remove the hyphens and change the ten to a 10 and read the name again for a good laugh. :D

Old adage that many I've worked with live by. If it won't fit/come off, force it. if it breaks, it wasn't meant to be anyway...

The trick is, don't use force. Use a bigger hammer.

Oh, Come on! Don't you guys know that it is not a hammer? It is either Psychology or a Fine Adjustment Tool! Comes in all sizes for the amount of adjustment needed --16 oz, 22 oz, 3 lb, 6 lb, and finally, 12 lb. for serious cases of mental adjustment only.
