man there was carpet every were ,,,when i took the cap off there was carpet linning the hull totaly inaccessable unless you took the cap off ......the carpet has to be the worst for soaking up water and just leaving the water stand against the wood ,,,,,,im sure it had some sound deadining capabilitys but man why carpet ,,,the boat is an 89 diddnt they have any thing else ............................any way ,,,what is a good substitute for sound deadining in those area now,,,some of the carpet in un accesable areas was for linning the bottom of storage areas and linning the ski locker etc ,,,,,,but i dont realy want to put the carpet back in those areas as it is just a water magnet

im putting carpet back in my boat, if you do good at the fiberglasssing stage, you can just paint it or tint the resin, but it has to be smooth or you will see every mistake. Also if you use indoor/outdoor carpet, of the right kind, its made of plastic, and CANT soak up water.

You could try the thick rubber mat that the boom-boom car stereo guys line the inside of their cars with. One product is Dynamat... Crutchfield Catalog

Or if it were my boat I would foam fill the voids. Give you sound deadening and floatation all at once.

Mark.

I feel your pain. I have a 1990 Cobra that was built around (and probably held-together by)purple monkey fur. Why anyone in thier right mind would install carpet in a bass boat, is beyond my ability to understand. This monkey fur holds water against the plywood decking and bulkheads. The stuff will grab every hook on board, until it is time to be stepped-on by your poor doggy.
It's comming out, and the deck will be painted ,and no-skid applied. The substrate will be bolstered using coroplast(the stuff they make campaign sinage from in leu of plywood or cardboard). This is an experemental use, granted...but it HAS to be better than purple monkey fur!
I use NON-BACKED outdoor carpet from the carpt places. Cheap, colors, UV proof and no backing, with a warranty. Use SS staples on hidden sides. ONLY get plush type, no loop types.
