When is a Starter Armature to bad to be used?

Got a '79 Johnson 150 model number 150TL79C that turns over extremely slow to almost not turning over at all almost like the starter has little to no torque. I've had the starter rebuilt 3 times now but I'm suspect that the brushes were the only thing that were replaced. I took the starter apart and the brushes and communicator are nice and clean but the armature looks like its been worn down considerably. The magnets in the housing are fine, it looks like the bushings went south and really ravaged the armature, yet the windings are intact and look good. I have cleaned every contact point for the starting system, checked battery cables, good 850CCA marine starting battery, and jumped the starter straight with jumper cables to no prevail. Before I dump the cash into the pale for a new starter just looking for anything I may have overlooked.

Sounds like you diagnosed your own problem. Did they remedy those worn bushings? If they did and the armature is no longer dragging, it should be ok. Testing an armature requires a device called a growler. Your repair guy probably has one. If not, maybe he isn't the right guy to go to. Shops specializing in starter repair should be able to fix it right the first time.

If checking the starter cables included taking the connections off and polishing then shiny, and you have confirmed that there is a good ground from the starter case to the engine block then it sounds like the starter is too far gone to return to like new condition.

Time for a new starter. Good luck. :)

A growler is the only way to properly check out a starter armature. And it has to be a good one for the different tests.

I did notice new bushings but this is also is the original vintage starter from '79. My rebuild guy must not be that reliable as the armature wasn't touched except for a good bendix shaft cleaning and a new bendix spring. New starter on the way then guys, thanks for the reassurance fella's!
