When was I born????

Hello, new member. I am a Mercury 9.8 hp outboard. I am a manual start, tiller steer. I am painted black from head to foot and my decals are brown and tan. I have a number attached to me, it is A112078. My owner really needs help finding the year I was born. Can anyone help???

Sorry but 9.8s did not have a letter prefix and 9.9 started at A918999 in 1986

Bzzzt... it comes right up as a 7.9/9.8 in the EPC. No model year reference, just all the parts listings.<br /><br />Brown stripe was early 80's though.<br /><br />-W

Thanks, the decals states 9.8, but I suppose it could have been replaced at some point. I want to clean it up and I want to have some decals made so I can SELL it(runs well no problems that I know of, had it 1 year). So I need the right hp and year so I can advertise it correctly. ANY MORE INFO IS APPRECIATED.

There is a 9.8 horse merc that was made between 1962 and 1969. Your serial number would put yours in 1962 or 1963. Tell us what spark plugs it uses, that may help.

Weren't they called 110s back then? Is it Black or White?

Yes, they were called 110s. 1962 was the first year that Mercury painted its outboards black, just to make sure that they did not look like the white Johnsons of that era.

I own a 1962 9.8 hp Merc 110 and it is original factory cloud white. I suggest you look on the oldmercs.com website which has lots of info, including pictures, up through 1976 models. This may help you eliminate some possibilities. Seems something doesn't quite add up here. Are you sure about the serial number?

Well, the serial # does not appear to have ever been tampered with. Also it does not appear to have ever been repained. Its all black. Like I said brown/tan decals on the hood/cowl area. I have been on oldmercs.com and I didnt see anything resembling it, but I'll go look again for sure. I was told it was an '85, but that doesnt appear to be the case. I am a Johnson fan myslef having worked on them for a dealer a few years back. <br /><br />All the info you all have provided is GREAT and I appreciate it. OH YEAH!!!!<br /><br />I forgot to give you all this info. I went to the mercury parts page and entered the serial number,(had to add a zero to the front of it) and it gave me a model # of 1010205. <br /><br />Does this help?
