1984 omc sea drive 120 hp(1.6L)? Do i leave them in if i swapped a crossflow style powerhead to a bubbleback style one. The reason i ask is because i did so and now am having an overheating issue. Any help would be appreciated.

Isnt this a duplicate of the other post?

First, post a model number. You keep talking about a 120, which is a looper, and then crossflows.

In order to help we need to know what you have. And try to stick with one thread so its less confusing.

OK. Thats a crossflow. Its nothing like a 2.0 looper.

Now, the deflectors can be accessed by removing the heads. The deflectors are little rubber pieces that simply slide in and out.

Just make sure the motor is indeed getting hot before we go chasing something that isnt there.

Re: where are the deflectors on a

The motor is getting hot on both heads. I compared the temp by touch from one motor to the other( i have twin motors). When my mechanic got a remanned powerhead from a reputable supplier they gave him a bubbleback style powerhead that is a 1.6L and said to use it. I am wondering if this is correct or if it is causing the overheating. The water coming from the telltale is weak and hot and the water coming through the exhaust is strong. On the other motor (the one we never touched) the water coming from the telltale is stronger and cooler with less water coming out of the exhaust.
Thanks

The bubbleback will work just fine. If youve done the pump (OE and complete) then the logical place to look is the deflectors. Since this powerhead is a fresh rebuild the deflectors should have been replaced.

I question the knowledge of this mechanic but had to use him out of necessity. I will ask him if the deflectors had been changed. Are the deflectors a part that would have been changed during the rebuilding of the powerhead or is it something that should have been inspected and replaced while the powerhead was off?

The deflectors are short length rubber hoses that fit in water passages in the block readily accessable when the heads are removed. The old ones should have been removed when the block was cleaned & replace on assembly.

How have you determined that you have an overheating issue? Did you have the water pump replaced on that motor? Replacing a water pump is not part of the job of replacing the powerhead.

I have a pair of 1987s.
