Where Are the Drain Plugs?

At the risk of sounding like a dope newbie, I had to ask! I have not yet had a chance to actually visually go around my engine, an OMC Cobra 5.8L, and am wondering where all the drain plugs are that need to be opened for the winter. Besides those, are there any other plugs or drains to be aware of?

Where might I find a decent diagram of my engine that shows all this stuff?
Thanks!!

Re: Where Are the Drain Plugs?

If you can order an OMC owners manual from an Evinrude/Johnson dealer, they cover it in detail, and so does the OMC shop manual. Usually the engine has 2 block drains, there is one drain on each exh manifold, sometimes one on the risers, one on the p/s cooler, and the Cobra drive has 2 drain plugs on one side of the pivot housing and one on the other side.
look at www.dougrussell.com
in the OMC parts section you can find the diagrams and may be able to figure it out that way. But if you are not sure, take it to a good marine tech, winterizing is not something to guess at for sure!

...and usually one on the power steering cooler. Also open the bottom hose opening to the water pump or pour in RV coolant from the top part of the hose. Make sure drive is in the down position to properly drain it. Change drive oil at this point because if there was any water infiltration into the drive oil, it can freeze and cause you grief...or take off the drive and store in a heated place. And yes leave the plugs off for the winter.

Spray in fogging oil into each piston and place a plastic bag over the carb and wrap it to keep wetness out.

..oh and I take out my battery and store it inside and charge it a few times over the winter to keep it fully charged...but this is optional.
