I went to home depot today to see how much the pressure treated plywood is for the deck and transom. They only do it for special orders. Are you guys using PT or marine? Does lowes maybe carry it?

Try a real lumberyard if there is one nearby.

I get mine from Lowes, although some items only HD carries. I haven't checked for PT plywood, though. I just used normal 1/2" for the deck and normal 3/4" for the transom and stringers.

Re: Where are you getting your plywood?

ah man you guys are all in cool states that let you buy guns............ and has actual lumber yards haha. I'm in southern cali and while there is a lumber yard by my house the boat is not near my house and I don't want to truck all that wood to where the boat is. I will give lowes a call though, if they don't have it then I guess Ill be driving.

So I do or don't have to use pressure treated lumber? I thought the glue they used in the laminates was better in PT?

Also are you guys encapsulating all the wood that goes in, deck, stringers, transom? Then tabbing it to where ever you need it? Reason I ask was I graphed out the boat with measurements on graph paper, if I encase all the wood with fiberglass it will throw off my measurements by maybe 1/8 or more of an inch.

I am using normal BC plywood (BC means B grade on one side, C grade on the other [marine plywood is B grade both sides, I believe]) coated on both sides with glass. I then tabbed it to the hull from both the top and bottom of the deck wood. Check out the last few posts of my thread if you want more info. I just finished the deck today.

Lowes and Home Depot here where I live both stock treated plywood but it looked like crap. Whatever you use needs to dry out and treated takes forever.

By the way, I'm using lowkee's method.

Re: Where are you getting your plywood?

So would the oak or birch furniture grade ply be suitable? Im not sure if I can go 1/2" on the deck because the top cap has the front bow seats molded in and the floor rests on part of the deck, if I use 1/2" it may throw that all off.

Look for exterior grade or cabinet grade as they will both use waterproof glue . Lowes is usually pretty good about doing special orders if they dont stock what you need they may be able to order it for you.

I used BC Grade Exterior plywood for the water proof glue, then sealed the heck out of it with Resin.

Re: Where are you getting your plywood?

Sweet so I called lowes and the lumber yard by my house,

The guy at lowes barely spoke a lick of English, conversation goes as follows.

Me: hello how are you today?
Him: ok
Me: I was calling to see if you carry pressure treated or marine grade plywood?
Him: Marine grade? Yes, I don't carry it.
Me: (wtf?) Ok well do you carry pressure treated?
Him: We have plywood you can treat it from stuff in paint department.
Me: Do you even understand what I'm saying?
Him: Yes, we don't have.
Me: *click*

Ridiculous.............

So I ended up calling the lumber yard by my house, found marine grade 3/4" for 83 dollars a sheet, and PT for 44.40 per sheet.

$44.40 for 3/4" treated seems a little high.

Trillhouse,

Nice to see you decided to do the restore...! I'm going with exterior grade ply on mine. The west texas heat is helping dry it out :D

Re: Where are you getting your plywood?

i dont know if the word marine plywood means anything, or if its just a word they put in front just so they can charge more. i am putting a floor in my 1988 searay sr23 and i was looking at plywood, i figured i would just spend the money and get the stuff that was made for water. But, anyway, i bought this wood from Menards at $70 dollars a sheet, and had to special order, only took 3 days to get it if that helps, they also explained to me that there was 7 different woods in the marine plywood, and they actually went down the list of the seven layers so i knew exsactly what was in it, so for their help and time i went ahead and purchased from them, i do believe lowes was more exspensive.

Re: Where are you getting your plywood?

I'm most likely going to use Baltic Birch from Menards unless I can get the equivalent or better for cheaper elsewhere. The 1/2 is 9 ply! exterior grade and runs about 40/sheet. I lifted a corner of it vs. the 5 ply arauco ply they had and it was noticeably more stable, though almost twice the cost....but the nice arauco I looked at had voids on the ends, where anything 1/2 with 9 plys isn't going to have that problem.

You don't need to use pressure treated wood. All you have to do is make sure you seal up the wood well. Either paint it with a few layers of resin, or encapsulate it in glass. I'm going to seal up the wood really well, put it in the boat and then put a good layer of glass over the top of it.

Re: Where are you getting your plywood?

I saw the birch and some oak stuff and thought about using it. I think I may use it also because it is very nicely finished. We are going to check out lowes selection tomorrow and see what they got.

I do have a couple other questions

1. how long should I dry the wood? Just sit it in the sun?

2. When you build your stringers, deck, transom do you encase the whole piece of wood with fiber glass then pl/tab it in?

3. the hole in the transom for the drive, should that be glassed too? If so will it throw off the size of the hole?

Pressure treat needs to be dried. Normal plywood is kiln dried, so unless it's been sitting outside in the humidity, it's ready to go.

Building the stringers is up to you. I'll tell you it's easier to glass the stringers when they are made and out of the boat laying on their side, than trying to slop resin up on them to coat them. You'll get enough of that when you put the tab of glass to hold them in the boat. I couldn't do that with mine since my stringers are "curved" towards the bow. The center stringer will get glassed before I put it in permanently though.

The outdrive hole can be cut and then sealed with resin, it doesn't need to be glassed. As long as the wood is properly sealed, any water that gets past the outdrive is going to end in the bilge and you'll know you have a problem quick enough. If you have a good seal on the outdrive, then there shouldn't be any issues to worry about anyway.
