I need to buy a carb cleaning kit for a 1973 Evinrude 6 HP. I live in Wilmington, NC and I've called all the big boat stores in town such as West Marine, Boater's World, and a few others and nobody sells these. Can somebody tell me where I can pick one up?

Jeff

Jeff,
Do you mean a Rebuild kit? I just picked up two here in Raleigh, from West Marine this morning, and plan on putting them in this weekend.

You may also try ordering from Boats Unlimited, they can get just about any part that you might need, higher price, but they can do it. There number is 919-596-4100. Boaters World in Raleigh 919-787-3338 and West Marines Number here is 919-871-6384.

Hope this helps.

Thanks,
Bryan Cox

Just buy a can of decarb (valtech) at any of the stores you listed. Its about $7.00. Follow the directions on the can. You use this with the motor running. It truly works.

You can also buy any carb cleaner at an automotive store for the exterior of the carb if you choose to clean it. Just spray it on.

Good luck.

I used the Sea Foam companies version of the Decarbonizer last weekend and it seemed to make a huge difference in the way the engine ran. It was called Deep Creep, from Napa about $4.99 a can. Ran one in the car also, ran much better.

Bryan

Bryan,

How much was the rebuild kit that you bought? Who is it made by? I think the girl I talked to on the phone at West Marine here had never heard of a carborator so they may have it.

I picked up a can of Gumout at Lowe's today. It says on the can 'Small Engine Carb + Choke Cleaner , Jet Spray' and I got it in the lawnmower section. Would this work?

Jeff

De-carb is the best to use and you use it while the engine is running.

Start the engine and let it idle for a a few minutes, then spray the de-carb directly into the carb throat and at the same time twist your throttle hanle to a medium RPM.

They recommend a whole can, but I would say about 1/2 can for your carb.

Anyway, once your finished spraying the de-carb in - shut down the motor.

Now let it sit for about a 1/2 an hour and then start it back up.

Run it for a while.

IT WILL SMOKE LIKE CRAZY.

After you finish this go ahead and replace your plug and your good to go.

You can use the gumout on the exterior of the carb if you choose, but definately use the de-carb.

Re: Where Can I Buy A Carb Cleaning Kit?

I think you all are a little confused here. De-carb products like valvtec only clean carbon out of the engine, it doesn't do anything for the carbs. What you need is a carb kit for rebuilding the carb. You will also need some carb cleaner which comes in a spray can or a bucket for soaking. The sierra carb kit you need is # 18-7043 which doesn't come with a float. You can get it from any local dealer or west marine, boaters world, etc.

Amen Whites Marine,
You can spray the outside and down the throat, that will make it look nice, but want do a thing for the inside, and that's what needs cleaning. It sure won't hurt to install the new carb. kit while you've got it apart.
That's my.02

Re: Where Can I Buy A Carb Cleaning Kit?

If I buy the kit does it come with directions or do I have to spend $30 for a manual? I'm only planning on keeping it for another couple of weeks so I don't really want to spend anymore then I have to.

I haven't messed with the inside of a boat motor before. Is it hard to do? How long does it normally take to rebuild the carb? Is it easy to mess up so I can't put it back together?

The engine is a '73 6 HP Evinrude. Does anybody know of any good resources online?

Jeff

Yes the kit comes with instructions but the manual will give you a lot better instructions and take you through it step by step.you will always be able to use it when it comes time to do something else. Just click on the link "Repair Manuals" at the bottom of this page or go to your local library and see if they have one.

The carb on that engine will be very simple to rebuild. Take it off the motor first, and disassemble it while paying close attention to how the pieces go together. The carburator kit can be found at an outboard engine repair shop or dealer that specializes in YOUR brand of engine.
It should cost no more than $14 bucks. A can of gumout carb cleaner is also needed. :)
