Where Can I Find Parts?

I have a 1977 Merc 50 horse Thunderbolt. I just purchased the motor and it wasn't taken care of very well. My question is where can I find parts for this so called "old" motor. Some parts I can get from my local dealer but I need to find the air cleaner and assembly that attaches to the 2 carbs. Anybody got any ideas of where to look?

They did not have an "air cleaner" on any of those that I know of. You can find common parts, (like carb kits etc.) for those motors on Oldmercs.com or other online places. If something is missing that is not a commonly replaced part you may need to look for a parts motor. Hope that helps. JR

Re: Where Can I Find Parts?

The 70's model 500 didn't have air cleaners on the front of the carbs? I was looking at a 650 today at the boat dealer and it didn't have air cleaners on it either. I was under the impression that mine should have because the front of the carbs are drilled and tapped for 2 small bolts to be threaded in each side of both carbs. It could be that it doesn't have air cleaners though that would explain seeing both motors with out. Thanks for the help.

At one time it may have had a small plastic grate over the throats, but that's about it. It was more a means of keeping bits of the cowling insulation from getting sucked in than anything else. Totally fine to run without them...

Cat, Some parts (ignition, charging, carb) are available many places on the web. If you go to www.dougrussell.com, you can look up the part numbers, and see what they have available for that motor as well. If you do a google search on the part number, you can save a few bucks.
