Not on a boat, but a mistake one could make on a boat.

Got my tractor out for Spring service, which includes oil and filter.

Put the catch reservoir under, pulled the plug, pulled the filter and went for a cuppajoe.

Came back, installed the new filter and started pouring Mobil 1 down the filler.

After 4 qts I checked the dipstick. EEEK!!! There aint no awl on the stick!

Yeah, that's right. It was all down in the catch reservoir along with last year's oil.

Reinstalled the drain plug and poured five more qts of Mobil 1 in it.

Now everything is okay, except my wallet. :(

Red sky at night. . .
JB :)

Been there done that. At least you noticed. Imagine if you had not checked the dip stick. So that done at a quicky lube type places.

I know you can pull the same stunt with a Yamaha XS1100. It's a little cheaper since it doesn't hold that much oil.

many yrs ago, right outta hi-school, i took a job as a beginning mech at a Caddy dealership. it got me outta the carpet mill, and i toldem i had been brought up to fix about anything, so fer sure i could do basic stuff like install hubcaps, change belts, do oil changes(everything this job incl)... my first week i was being monitored closely, and found out the hard way that some oil filters will leave their rubber gasket stuck to the engine when you remove them, and once cranked up, the oil will run right out between the old & new gaskets! hehehe. i made a great impression on my serv mgr

ebbtide,

OH YEAH, know that one well. Toyotas were notorious for that.

My wife had the oil changed (at the Toyota dealership)on our brand new 1983 Supra (600 miles) in preperation for a trip. The next day, the double gasketed oil filter decided to "pop". She left a trail of oil for about 2 miles before the engine "squeaked". Had it towed to the dealer. They replaced the filter and oil and it started up. We drove it 1500 miles on the trip and the way home it started to rap on accel. When the dealer tore it apart they found every bearing, bushing and piston wiped out.

It took the dealer and Toyota four months of finger pointing before I got a new engine. Toyota ponied up the engine even though it CLEARLY was the dealers fault.

Don't know it to be true but a friend swears it to be. He was dealing with a local GM dealership looking at a new arrival used car in the back of the lot not even cleaned up yet for sale. While walking to look at this car a new hired mechanic was under the hood of another car standing in the middle of 15 or 20 empty oil containers. The salesman asked him what he was doing. The young mechanic said he was changing the oil. The salesman then asked him how much he was supposed to put in the engine and the mechanic's response was "till I see it fill up to that hole" (the valve cover fill cap).

We had a marine operator who was changing the oil in a pair of big Detroits. The next day when the relief captain checked the oil and found it to be not showing on the stick, the first guy claimed during his "cupajoe", the oil had been stolen. Didn't happen on my shift.

Maui Girl,

I didn't think you had to change oil in Detroits. I thought they either leaked or burned it all. They always have fresh oil. :D

Re: Where da heck did awl thu awl go?

We took one of our big International trucks to the dealership to get the oil changed and serviced, and didn't get to bring it home the dealership uses air power to install new oil and the air compressor went out and no one checked the stick to see if oil went in the motor or not. So when the service boy jumped it the truck to back it out of the shop it didn't go far. Detroits need oil to run. LOL .. Although I do have to say once they rebuilt the motor it run a lot better than any of the other new trucks. suppose to be the same but I think they must have put in a different cam. Needless to say I don't think the owner of the company had to much nice to say to the employee's.

Re: Where da heck did awl thu awl go?

Years ago, I had a Chevy Luv diesal (a rebadged Isuzu actually). That little 4 banger diesel held 6 or 7 qts oil. Once when changing, I was pouring in last qt when my neighbor came over and pointed out the trail of oil running down driveway behind the truck. Wife was working so I had to get my neighbor to stop laughing long enough to drive me to auto store for 7 more qts of oil and a BIG BIG bag of dry sweep. And of course, I've never left the oil filler cap off after adding a qt ;)

BL...

Back in 80 I was at a used car lot, looking at a Land Cruiser with 7000 miles on it. Salesman tells me the engine has 2000 miles. I asked why. The owner was chaging the oil, pulled the plug to drain and went down stairs to get the filter and new oil. Wife decide to go to the store.

Re: Where da heck did awl thu awl go?

Knew a guy who thought "how hard can it be". He decided to change his own oil to save the cash.Well he wound up draining his manual transmission and throwing 4 quarts of extra oil in his crankcase. The incredible part of the whole thing was that he actually got the oil into the engine though the dip stick tube. He fashioned a small funnel out of paper for the task. He didn't even know about the filler cap. Oh yea, he drove the car away with no lube in the tranmission and toasted it. It has to make you wonder WHAT WAS HE THINKING!!!!!

Re: Where da heck did awl thu awl go?

I can take the cake on this one...

Changed the oil on my '86 harley davidson sportster, running great, flying on highway, neglected to tighten filter, 80mph on parkway rear wheel wobbling??? engine shuts down, pull over, oil all over leg and side of bike with filter, filter spun. Re-spin on filter, wait for buddy with 3 quartsof oil (who ran out of gas on the way to bring me oil)... dump oil in and away we go to parade. NEVER AGAIN, wobbly wheel on highway very scary.
