Where did i go wrong

I just changed the impeller on my 98 40 hp force by mercury elpt came apart smooth went back together smooth reattached shift rod now motor makes a clicking noise when you spin prop in fwd reverse and motor won't go in neutral I'm a newbie so if you need to laugh and point it's ok just wanna know where i went wrong any and all help will be appreciated thanks folks you have helped me on other issues thank you again fishaddicted

With out being there and pictures, it sound like you removed the pivot pin in the foot, and when you put it back together, you didn't get the shifting linkage aligned up when installing that pivot pin. But as I said, that is merely a wild guess. JMHO
