Where did I goof with tilt/trim?

I just rebuilt one of the trim cylinders on my '76 888 Mercruiser 1 drive. It had gotten some corrosion under one of the seals in the brass slide and didn't work properly. Now that I have rebuilt it and replaced the seals. Now my drive goes up great, but getting it to trim down is another story. It will try and slowly creep down, but it would take 15 minutes to get there. I can put some weight on the drive and it goes down ok. I can crack the up line on that cylinder and it lowers ok. What did I miss? It seems to work ok on the workbench operating it by hand in a bucket of oil, but it doesn't seem as springy as the other one. There are no visible leaks.

Sounds like air in the system, you'll have to bleed it.
make sure you have extra fluid for the resovoir.
have someone run the trim up,crack the line that feeds the cylinder up bleed air out, tighten line.
do both cylinders on the up stroke, first, then the down line on both sides.then run it up and down quite afew times..

rich

Jason, you are passing oil between the upside of the cylinder and the down side [an internal leak] your description of failure is a classic, more than likely a shredded o ring on the adaptor on the forward end of the internal tube, or a bad check ball in the shock piston...time to take it apart again...

Bings. Re-did the seals in the "good" cylinder and the problem is solved. One other question though. Anyone have any idea why, when I try to trim up, the motor looses a dramatic number of RPM's? It will kill the motor when idling.

check the ground connection of the pump ,it should be on a bolt on the flywheel hsg.preferably by itself.
