Ok its a 3.7 Litre, 224 cubic inch, half a 460CI Ford, Aluminum block Cast Iron headed Inline 4 slugger. So I don't see where 470 comes into play.

Ok, 3.7 turns out to be 225.7ci? You multiply that by two and come up with 451.4ci. Is that block suppose to be half a 460 or is the head the only thing it shares in common with the Ford big block?

I think it's a Mercruiser Mystery!

Re: Where did the title "470" Come from anyway?

Mercruiser liked to number some engines by number of cylinders and rated HP.

An 888 was 8cyl (Ford 302) with 188hp
898 was 8cyl (Chevy 305) with 198 hp

So when they invented that motor, they called it a 465, 470, 480, 485. Ultimately, they renamed it the 3.7L or 3.7LX.

Ivaz, considering the block is Aluminum, it is not "half of a 460 block". Only the head and the pistons are 460 parts. (Because at the time of its invention, Ford supplied engines to Mercruiser. If Chevy had been their supplier, it probably would be a 454 head and pistons.) I'll assume Mercruiser used a slightly shorter crankshaft throw to come up with 224cid, as opposed to 230cid which would truly be half a 460.
