Where do I put the sending unit?

I have a 1989 Evinrude E40TLCEC outboard and would appreciate any output as to the location on the block to install a sending unit for temp guage. I was wondering if there were any diagrams available to show a plug or tap that I might use instead of like using a Z bracket. Thanks

Just look for a tapped boss on the heads.

Nothing wrong with a "Z" bracket installation provided the installation results in the sender contacting the head in the hottest spot (close to the spark plug) on the highest cylinder. The net result is you now have a cylinder head temperature gauge instead of a water temp gauge. Cylinder head temps rise quicker than water temp so it makes a better system. After prolonged running however, the two should come close to each other.

I installed one with the "Z" bracket, and found it pretty consistant and reliable. The needle on the guage seems to run up pretty close to hot, but it is always the same. Tattletale water is constant and not overheating. I just had to get used to where the needle likes to run.
