Where do i start?

Yesterday, as I slowed the throttle on my DT115, it shut off. No forewarning or bangs. It just quit. When I try to start it, it will only engage the starter and won't turn the flywheel. I am assuming bad news since it seems to be locked down. What should I do? Thanks in advance.

Remove all spark plugs, then try to turn motor with a wrench on big nut on top of flywheel, if it won't turn over that way then it's locked up and will need to pull heads to see what's stuck. Good Luck!

Recheck to see if the flywheel will turn by hand after it cooled off.

If it will turn over check compression.

Check the lower unit lube to see if there is metal in it.

If everything is still locked up ,drop the lower unit to see if it is in the lower unit or motor.

Start taking apart and see what all happened and what is needed to fix.
Don't forget to locate what caused it to lock up and fix that because it will happen again after the repair if you don't.

I pulled the lower unit and that's where my problem is. The crankshaft is locked up. I'm in the process of tearing it down to see how much has been damaged.

Did you find any oil or water in the lower unit or was it dry?

No water in oil. The oil was ok but it looks like the driveshaft thrust bearing went dry and burnt up. It looks like I'm ordering everything on the driveshaft except the pinion gear and nut. I have to recheck the housing as well. I don't know why it went dry, but some damage could've started before I bought it, I guess.

Good thing it didn't crack your lower unit housing. Getting a LU apart and shimmed, etc can be tricky. I've never gone farther than replacing gaskets and seals. Hope you are up to it.
