Where does my 83 35hp Johnson get its air from?

Hello :
I do not mean to seem dumb, but this motor cover does not have any type
of an opening for the motor to breath.. So where is the air intake at on it. My
94 40hp Johnson had an opening at the rear where the lift handle was.. This on does not have any hole I can find..
I have been thinking about drilling a few holes in the cover or cutting a hole and put in a few screen type vents. ALso I know that my 40hp did not have any type filter and this one does not have any either.. There is no kind of plate or mount attached to the carb at all..
Any one know or have any advice ??
Thank you for your time:

The air intake is in the hood pan directly under the carburetor. That carburetor does not incorporate a cover. Do not drill holes in the hood. Are you having a problem of some kind?

Re: Where does my 83 35hp Johnson get its air from?

Hello Joe:
The motor was running too rich. I found that the primer setting was half open twards manual.. It was going thuough a lot of gas.. I had the carb rebuilt too. I just got a set of NGK plugs and I hope this all takes care of it.. I was just very curious where the motor got its air from. I did not see any openings.. Not like my 94 40hp. with the opening at the handle..
Thanks for your help!

You could drill a hole in your hood.
It has 2 advantges

1st
It MIGHT get some extra air in and it MIGHT get some extra cooling.

2nd
The biggest advantage you can always recognise your own engine if it is stolen  . and it wont get stolen that fast .
I drilld a hole in it for that reason,I made a nice aire intake and looks great too:D .

If you drill a hole in your cowling you will be leaning out your mixture, and quite possibly under-lubricating your engine.

This stuff was originally designed by real actual engineers and stuff.

get you carb and timing,(link n sinc) right and you won't need an extra hole.

I have drilld the hole near my strearing trottle handle.
Made a nice cover from a large PVC tube.
Glued it to the cover and used some (the stuff where you can fill holes with)
to make it smooth than painted it.
I.ve re adapted my mixture.

I m worryed more about the engine get stolen than water in it (cover not just a hole).
It's just styling not that i need the hole what you could do also is buy an antenna at youre local car parts store drill little hole use some glue to make it water thight and bolt it to youre engine, easy and safe no water in youre engine.

Ill take a picture of it and trie to post it (I dont have a digicam my self)
It might take a while

Re: Where does it breath from?

Thanks to all who replied! I did not think of messing up the Mixture (fuel) ..
I guess as long as it is running good , I should leave it alone...
I did get the carb rebuilt and adjusted, also found that the primer valve was not clear closed. (to run) The NGK plugg's seemed to really have helped too..
I told my wife it now is runnng great.. I am now giving Amsoil Hp a try, I mixed it at about 50:1. I really find it hard to guess on these oil cans, I think I put aprox. 14oz. oil to 5.13 gallons of gas.. I just calculated it 47: 1..
so any other thoughts or coments are welcome...
Thanks again to all:

Buy one of the mixing bottles..it has all the formulas for mixing ratios....and there is no guessing...it is graduated on the sides and you just add the oil to how many gallons of gas you are adding it to....cost around 4-5 dollars....

Glad to see the boat is running good
