It cannot get into the carb unless the float in the carb lifts the needle, to allow the fuel to come into the carb.

metalmessiah,The fuel continues through the fuel pump and builds pressure against the float actuated needle valve in the carburetor bowl. When these valve or valves seat the bulb will feel firm ,indicating that the carb bowls are full of fuel up to the float setting.

Re: where does the fuel stop???

ob is correct. The needle valve and float assy. in a carburetor are gravity activated. When the bowl is empty the float is low in the bowl and the needle is off it's seat. When fuel enters the bowl as it does when you pump your bulb, the float rises to the point where the needle contacts the seat, closing off incoming fuel. This causes the bulb to become firm. It can't push any more fuel. I hope a second opinion helps reassure you. Safe boating, dgs.
