Where does this wire connect? '66 40hp

Motor is a 1966 Evinrude 40 hp electric start. I Just finished with replacing coils, condensers, points and plug wires as well as putting in a carb kit but noticed that I had this black ground wire that I don't know where it connects to. One end connects to the powerhead and it about 4"-6" long. I took pictures before I started but I cannot find the location of this short ground. I have the service manual but no luck there. Does it possibly connect to the bottom of the magneto plate with one of the long screws that hold the coil in place? Any help is greatly appreciated.

Hmmm does look like it grounds the plate or something. Let me dig around ,Im just learning Rudes/Johnnys.

Thats why when I work with a new motor even if I have wiring diagrams I snap camera shots like it's a crime scene. But Iv'e forgot here and there and had to dig around to find my way back out of the 'rabbit hole'. You have a nice 1966 motor from the little I can see, nice and clean . :)

Thanks for the help. It is a pretty clean motor and was running pretty well but thought I would do some preventative maintenance just in case. I have the wiring diagram but I cannot figure it out and my pictures do not show this wire. That's why I think it may have been attached underneath the plate and came off when I removed it.

NP, sorry I cant %100 give you your "magic bullet" just yet. Ill keep digging around, but it does look like a ground from where you said. The wire can only reach a numbers of area due to its length.

Um, I'm probably wrong here, but it looks like that wire goes down to the vacuum cut-out switch. Check your diagram for which lug of the c/o is the ground...

And watch that condensor wire in the first pic, looks like it might rub the underside of the flywheel.

Found it That wire goes to a screw on the bottom of the armature plate,It looks as though its a positive ground, meaning it grounds a ground to a ground.Maybe the armature plate needs extra ground rather than just the 4 screws that hold it on.You'll have to remove the plate and screw it on.It goes to a screw near where the wire is now.Did you have a extra screw?

It's not quite long enough to reach the cutoff switch and I did not remove any nuts or bolts other than on the flywheel and magneto plate. I'm thinking that maybe it was not attached to anything and just tucked up under the plate and then was exposed when the plate was removed. Thanks for the tip on the condenser wires, I have flattened all of them down so hopefully no rubbing. Do you think it would hurt anything to try to start this thing up without that wire connected?

The site is running really slow for me today and I must have been responding at the same time. Thank you very much for finding the location of the wire. I don't have any screws left over but there were two clips under the plate for holding down the spark plug wires and I bet it was connected to one of those. I'll find the one that is closest to the wire and attach it there. Thanks again, this site is great.
