Where has this water originated from?

Hi,

I'm looking at purchasing a 1999 Glastron GS 229 with 250 hours use. It's in the water now (since July) but had been in dry dock for a couple of years whilst the owner enjoyed using it's replacement. I'm arranging for an inspection/survey but noticed myself something which concerned me. Within the cabin I lifted the cushions and found a very small area which was wet and which smelt like sea water. I've attached a couple of pics. I am a newbie and this would be my first boat and I don't like the sound of water on the inside lol.

On the hull and deck I cannot see an opening for this to have penetrated. The white carpet on the sidewalls (just behind the headrest in the picture) has a slight damp feel, but again quite a small area. Any suggestions as to whether this would be a minor or serious problem?

Water that high up is usually from a leaking seal, either a hatch or window.
But do not rule out a fixture of some type with bolts/screws going through the cuddies roof. top to bottom, bottom to top.

It seems to be above the waterline. Check as mentioned above before mold sets in.

It's actually about on the top of the water line if I try to line up with the outside. This boat is moored in the marina with almost no tidal disturbance and its not been out running recently either I believe. The only hatch is one at the top of the cabin which doesn't look like a route where this water would have taken.

If I were to guess, I would say RUB Rail. Just my .002.

I can see the water marks in the picture. Look where there coming from. Is there any windows above the marks?

Water travels in some of the weirdest paths and ways. Most likely a rub rail seam, hatch seal, widow, but you're right in being concerned about where it's originating from. Mold and mildew will keep rotting the boat out until it's sealed up. Good luck.

You can see the staining from running water directly above the collection area. That looks like where the rub rail is commonly located. You're dealing with one of afew posibilities:

1) handrail stanchion is leaking through one of the bolt holes.
2) cleat is leaking through one of the bolt holes.
3) bolt connecting deck to hull (behind rub rail) is leaking
5) rubrail screw is leaking.

You'll have to pull hte panels and douse the area with a garden hose. you WILL eventually see a drop form somewhere.
