Where is it?

I have a 1957 evinrude 35 horse bigtwin 25930-08866. I have a Seloc Manual that shows a blowup of the power head, but it covers more than just my motor. I am trying to replace the thermostat, but it is not where the picture is showing it. Does anyone know where it is located on this model?

Are you reasonably sure you've got one? I didn't think they put thermostats on the 35's until 1959.

Actually, I'm pretty sure it doesn't. Check out the BigTwin's ad from '59. The part about the 'new thermostatically controlled cooling system.'

I can't tell over the distance. Have you tested the powerhead (engine) to see if it's overheating? If you can hold your hand for five seconds on top of the top cylinder (on the block, not the head) during WOT running, it probably isn't.
If the powerhead's not overheating, but the leg seems way too hot, I would check the timing, carb sync, and mixture (for leanness) to make sure it's not the exhaust itself that's too hot.

Do I have to remove the flywheel to syncronize carbs and timing

Re: Where is it?

You only have to remove the flywheel for the timing, but it's probably not off. You can check it with an automotive timing light if you have one. The marks on the flywheel should line up between the two marks on the armature plate, just above the brass cam (that the roller rolls on).

Carb sychronization is simple to do and important for performance. Page 5-30 has the procedure. Pay attention to paragraph 16 on your engine. The description of the pointer and mark lining up is not very good. The line on the cam should point to the middle of the thing sticking up from the manifold, just to the left of the roller assembly.

thanks, I have read the proceedure and it wasn't very clear. I will read it a couple more times before I try. The brass roller you mention seems to be worn pretty well and has a groove from advancing. Shouldn't this have some type of rubber covering, or something to prevent metal to metal contact?

Yes, later ones are rubber with a nylon hub. If you look closely at the picture on the top left of 5-30, you'll see the new style one.
Though it's worth checking this anyway, I don't think it would have very much to do with your heating problem since the timing gets locked at about 1/2 throttle onward. I take it that it's getting hot at higer rpms that's the problem.

It took me a few read throughs myself. It is really unclear. Ignore paragraphs 17 and 18 for your engine entirely.

it looked right on when I checked it and the motor runs great. I have ran it for about 30 minutes at a time wot and it didn't cut out or anything. I havent touched the block for warmth,I just see the water sizzling. I will test temp at cylinder next time out.

Re: Where is it?

If you ran WOT for 30 minutes fine and steam wasn't pouring out the water outlet, your engine is not overheating. The only concern I would have is that your running lean, since this leads to excessive exhaust tempuratures. You adjusted the high speed needle according to the manual, right? I would double check that setting myself. Pull the spark plugs and make sure the firing end looks right.

The plugs looked alright when I pulled them out. I went by the book on the high speed adjust, If I adjust it any farther it starts to cough.
