I have a Mercruiser 4.3L 262 Magnum V6 and I don't see the oil filter anywhere, does that mean it is underneath where I can't see it or am I missing it completely? I expect it to look just like the fuel filter does.

It looks like the water separator if that?s what you are talking about. It should be port side in the back bottom corner of the block. They do sell kits to relocate them but, I figure they would have put it in an easy place to access.

Yes I was expecting it to look like the fuel filter/water separator, still cant see it so I am assuming it is not something I can get to right?

You should be able to get to it. If it?s mounted on the block it will be vertical and screwed in thru the bottom of the block. You might have to get on your stomach and look. You should see the filter or a hose coming from the back corner of the engine. If you find a hose, follow it.

Yeh I cant find it visually, is there is possibility that there isn't an oil filter, otherwise it is completely underneath and out of sight. I don't have a mirror but if i have to use one to find then i cant change it for sure.

There is an oil filter on the engine, unless it's been removed and not replaced. But if that's the case, the engine will not run long. Like it's been mentioned before, it should be on the port side close to the rear. That means looking at the engine, it will be on the right side close to the back of the engine. I know some boats are close quarters back there, but you should still be able to reach back and feel it. I have changed some filters by feel alone.

We need another thread about a marine tech charging too much for an oil change.

you're right Don...people who don't do this work really have no idea...and after owing my first boat...the first thing I'll look at on the next one...is how easy things are to get at...I was lucky with this one...the back is all open with none of that new style all glassed in areas on new boats that give you no room to get at anything aft of the middle of the manifolds....I look at some of these new boats at the shows and I cringe...I bet the techs want to take a Sawazll and cut all that unecessary 'glass outa there!

Is it possible it's a brand new boat, with the oil filter from the factory relocated to the upper left front of the engine?

They make remote oil filters, may want to invest in one... I have one on my motor and It sits on top of the motor, just by the riser on the exhaust... Sure beats the heck out of digging for it...

Now if they could do the same for the block drains :D

I started worrying that I didn't have one cause I really could not find it I reached all around under there and I was not feeling it or seeing it. Then I removed a panel next to the engine so I could look through it ans walla there it was. thanks for the help.
