I am looking at a 70 hp OMC triple for sale (about 1980). Can someone please tell me how to tell if the waterpump is working on this motor? I can't tell where it is from my repair manual; my best recollection is a hole that lets out some of the exhaust, about half way down the lower unit, should spit a little - is that correct? I can test it either with the flushmuffs, or in a small tank. Also, can someone please tell me how to verify that the 'hot horn' is functioning? Any other tips on evaluating these units are appreciated.. Thanks Rockhead, western Mass, just got 8" of snow :*(

Hello Rockhead,
These motors in that year didn't have a tell/tell, but you should see water comming out of the exaust reliefs on the lower leg just under the lower motor pan in the rear. To test the hot horn you can disconnect the tan lead thats comming out of the head then ground the the wire (not the one that is plugged into the head, but the other one) then you should hear the hot horn going off.
Hope thin helps

My 1980 Johnson 3-Cylinder has a tell-tale coming out the starboard side/rear-corner of the belly pan. The hose comes from the exhaust side of the motor block. The slots in the motor leg are an exhaust relief - not a tell-tale.
- Scott
