I am putting new water pump kit in my 1970 25hp Johnson. I unbolted lower unit and i can't figure out where to unhook the shift linkage. I have been told there is a bolt under the carb, but only bolts i see are for the bottom half of the cowling. Please help!

the coupler is behind a plate on the exhaust housing..2 screws hold the plate on...remove this plate and you'll see the coupler...remove the lower screw completely and your shift linkage with be disconnected....shop2.evinrude.com..boats.net...or marineengine.com will have parts diagrams you might find helpful

Yup, should be an elongated oval shaped plate with two flat head screws...inside you'll see a bolt that you take all the way out...careful, don't drop it....might have to play with the shifter a bit when you put it back together.
I did anyways on my 72..
