Where is the model number?

Bought a Jonboat yesterday and got a free Johnson 9.5 outboard with it. The first problem is the transom mount parts are missing so I don't know the model number.

My question: is the model & serial numbers located anywhere else on it?

Gotta know the year/model so I can start hunting for the missing parts for this project.

Steve,

Usually, the model/serial numbers are stamped onto one of the core (freeze) plugs in the engine block.

You are looking for a model number like these:
MQ-10 to MQ-14 (1964-68)
9R69 to 9R73 (1969-73)
If there is a L in it too you have a long shaft.

Re: Where is the model number?

Thanks djohn93 and bear, but no joy. There is a nice shiney new freeze plug on the top behind the flywheel but it has no numbers on it. Is that the only plug?

I guess the Johnson 9.5's were only made between '64 and '73. right?

Would there be a way to ident the year by the features on the motor? Or by part numbers on certain parts?

Re: Where is the model number?

Thanks Bear, those pics helped. Since mine has a dark painted lower unit I have it narrowed down between 68 and 73. So today I found the bones of a 73 and got the top end with mount, powerhead, carb, rope assembly, ignition etc for $30. Just missing the fuel pump as far as I can tell. Found out my local library has a Johnson repair manual so I reserved it. About ready to turn some wrenches.
