It must have been in the 40 to 60 hp range . It was missing it's gearcase, so it was even ready for a jet drive.
Thanks for the replies , I should do a better at asking questions. 82rude answered what I was asking. Interesting isn't it. My dad had a Mercury, so I'm fond of them.
With my vintage motor, I knew the 9.8 was made in Canada. You need the serial # .I had been given a non running 1970 7.5hp. The plastic throttle linkage was broken, so when a silver face 9.8 showed up as parts motor on Craig's List for $200, I lowballed him at $50 . He had tried to replace the impeller and made mess of the pump. He didn't tell me the swivel was seized, also. He did get back to me after a couple of weeks. I guess his father-in-law was the culprit, he hadn't greased a salty. . So I put the powerhead off the 9.8 on the 7.5 leg. Good compression 119 and 125. It didn't start until I put 10 drops of fuel in each of the cylinders . However the carb kit was125 with taxes, and that was with a white hair discount.. Ouch. I think a newer $800 9.9hp that purrs is a pretty good deal. But what fun would that be?
