I have a 1999 Mercruiser 454 Mag. Sometimes I turn the key and just get a "click"- nothing else. Mechanic told me to replace the starter slave solenoid. I already purchased the solenoid from iboats. I'm trying to make sure I'm in the right place though before I start taking things apart. It LOOKS like the slave solenoid on my engine is at the back of the intake manifold buried under the Mercathode connections. It looks like the solenoid is wired directly to the main engine circuit breaker (large red button) which is right next to it.

The solenoid that I'm looking at looks like the one I just ordered. Anyone who has done this before- am in the right place?

Thanks.

Head up to the adults only sticky at the top of this forum and download the OEM service manual for your engine. It will show you where it is.
While up there, look at the "How To" on checking your starting system. Not sure how a mechanic can say it's the slave solenoid without doing some checking first.

Ayuh,....
Diagnosing the issue rather than buying parts based on heresay usually works awhole lot Better...
Odds are,... removing, sanding, cleaning,+ reinstalling the starter wiring will Fix the issue...

Re: Where is the starter slave solenoid?

The mechanic was repairing the outdrive. He had to start the moter a few times in the process. He told me from this that the starter relay was going bad. He would have replaced it but he couldn't reach me to get authorization to do the "extra" work. When I picked up the boat he mentioned I should replace the starter solenoid since he didn't do it.

That's how that all went down.

Thanks for the advice.
