where is the water coupling

I took out the lower unit of my 1985 merc 25 hp. Is there supposed to be a water coupling at the end of the copper water tube (is this coupler also called the upper water tube seal?) Mine is bare copper at the end. Does this coupler attach to the powerhead or the water tube? If powerhead, how do I get at it to check for wear?

I think you are talking about the water tube seal as there is no coupling, Goto the BAM Marine site and ck their parts manual for your engine

Okay, but is there an upper and lower water tube seal. If so, where is the upper seal since the end of the copper tube is bare. Can I access it easily. This is my last ditch effort to correct a low psi and extremely hot water discharge. I've tried everything else I can think of, but I need some guidance on the whereabouts of these water tube seals. Thanks.

They can only be in two places -- at the top of the water tube on the lower unit, or the bottom of the water tube in the upper housing. If they aren't on the lower unit, reach up in the housing. If they aren't in either place, someone screwed up somewhere along the line.

Thanks for the response. Now the diagram I'm looking at shows the water tube connected to water tube housing then to a water tube seal and spacer. This goes into the adaptor plate assembly. Is this the upper seal your refering to? If so, how am I supposed to "reach up there" and how can I see the seal if it is covered up by the water tube housing?

Now after looking at the diagram, I'm assuming there are two water tubes (top and bottom) so should there be a rubber seal at the end of the upper tube and is that what connects the bottom tube? Sorry for dumb questoins, but pictures can't tell me everything but detailed descriptions from you guys really helps.
