Have you checked the Carbs? When were they last rebuilt?

Have you checked the Spark Plugs? Compression on each cylinder? They should all be over 100 and within 10% of each other. Has the timing been checked? Do you have spark on all cylinders? Does the Primer bulb get soft when you have the problem with the throttle? If so then make sure that you have don't have a clogged vent on your Gas tank or any holes in the fuel lines. You might also want to check and replace all your filters in the fuel system to see if that is causing any of this.

What year and model is the engine also, this will help some of the other experts help you better.

Hope this helps,
Bryan Cox

Re: Where should I start...Motor hesitant...

somethimes when I pump th eprimer bulb it doesn't get as hard as it used to, but I cant find a hole anywhere. Something else that's strange is that when I pump the bulb, sometimes a little bit of gas leaks from where the hose attaches to the tank and that has never happened before. Its like these a looseness where it attaches to the can, but the motor is still getting fuel. When can I find a gauge to test the compression. I don't know the last time the carb was rebuilt. What does that entail? I changed the plugs last year and maybe put 25 hours on it since then, should I have to replace them again. Oh yeah, do happen to know the purpose of lower end gear lube?

If you are an occasional user, and depending on old gas, get rid of it. Start with a clean tank and fresh gas. Try some fresh stuff before you do anything else -- problem might go away.

If gas can leak out of the fuel line, air can leak in and cause problems. Even though the motor gets gas, it may not get enough as you accelerate. As the motor tries to suck more gas, it may also suck more air resulting in a lack of gas.

Try fixing the fuel line leak first to see if that solves your problem.

A carb rebuild entails installing new gaskets, new float, new needle valve, new needle valve seat. While you've got it in pieces you should also clean it with some aerosol carb cleaner (espicially the jets). The parts for the rebuild can be purchased from any dealer in a kit. Really isn't a very difficult job if you take your time, have a manual handy and pay attention to how things come apart/go together. Do a search on "carbs" using the search tool above and you'll find lots of info on this topic.

The lower unit oil lubricates the gears that transfer power to your prop. Should be replaced annually or if you suspect water has leaked into the lower unit.

Hope that helps.

Good luck!
