Hi all,
On the northern lakes we used spend time watching for loons to surface as we had thought it may indicate where abouts the baitfish are. Sometimes it worked well as we could see the schools on the fishfinder after approaching the area where the Loon dived or surfaced and we caught fish too at times.

One time we were out on Pigeon Lake near dusk about to begin walleye fishing when we spotted a Loon on the surface only it was not doing the usual dive when we came within 150 yards of it. Now I'm not sure about others, but I have never gotten' anywhere close to Loon before it dived and they looked the size of a duck from the distance.

Well, this time was different as this Loon couldn’t dive and it kept going down and bobbing back up. My fishing partner said he thought judging by the bird not diving a hundred yards ago, it may be tangled in fishing line.
We shut down the main engine and slowly approached using paddles. Sure enough it was caught in fishing line and could not move. My buddy suggested we use the fishing net to get it above the water so we could cut the line the frantic bird was caught in.. he also mentioned that loons will go for your eyes and be careful as I was the person that was going to hold the bird by the neck so it couldn’t attack while cutting the fishing line.

Well we ended up bringing it up on deck to free it. Let me tell you, Adult Loons are huge birds. I simply could not believe how really big they are. The beak alone was about four inches in length and the bird must have weighed about fifteen pounds. Anyway, the bird was freed and probably made it home a little l;ate that night.

My hats off to you guys for helping a beautiful and somewhat dangerous bird out of it's almost certain doom. Some would not have bothered to help it. I think Loon calls are one of the sweetest sounds any bird makes. I once heard a Loon and Coyote respond to each others calls one night while fishing on a very quiet a local lake. It was pretty neat to hear that conversation.

M9.9,

You did a terrific thing. As mommicked said, not everyone would have...

I havn't had the opportunity to see or watch loons yet. I'd love to one day soon.

I saved a Green Heron from a snapping turtle that had it's foot, in a small farmpond I fished as a kid. I saw the bird trying to takeoff and obviously stuck on something. I didn't know it was a snapper till I pulled it's head out of the muddy water holding the birds legs w my fingers way too close to the snappers mouth:eek: We had a tug of war while I poked him w a stick and the turtle finally let go, the birds toes were injured but I think it probably recovered, it flew away in a flash.

Fished a lake last year where we were using jigs with a minnow, bouncing off the bottom in 26-32' of water.

We thought we were getting strikes, kept losing the minnows, or about 3/4 of the minnow was gone.

We could cast out in any direction, and shortly after the jig hit the bottom, we got a strike.

Turns out it was a loon, diving from 100' away, locating the bait and stealing it, then surfacing.

Once we realized what was happening, we gradually made shorter casts, till the bird was within 20' of us.

Then we just threw the "disabled" minnows to him, till he came within 6' of the boat.

Never caught a fish that entire weekend, but we made a friend.

Hats off to you on saving that bird. Beautiful aren't they.

That's a first, I'd never think a Loon could be coaxed anywhere near humans or boats. Yes, they are beautiful birds. I'm pretty sure they are almost non-capable of walking on shore.

I did'nt know there were Loons around here and had never seen or heard one until 5+ years ago. My bird book says accidental this far south. I now think I saw some from a distance before that I assumed were the nasty cormorants? that plague the lakes in vast ##s sometimes. They look alike from afar to me but the Loons are larger. I saw one up close and thought it must be lost one day, But I hear them also now and then, and they must be staying around or expanding their range here.

M9, was the bird aggressive with you, fearing for its life? I hear that often times they are relaxing and can kind of 'FEEL' your intentions of helping it.

That happened w the small Green Heron. It flapped and struggled furiously as I approached and quickly grabbed its legs half submerged in the mud and water. It bit and pecked at my hands for a moment and then relaxed as I-we wrestled w the turtle and it remained calmish until I released it:) .......Seagulls on the otherhand are not so complacent w offered assistance, I think they're too proud, tough or mean to accept help out of a jamb!

The bird was totally freaked-out from what I remember, it left what I called a rainbow surprise all over the deck before we released it. I'm not sure how or if I could have handled it and the problem had I been alone.

I'm not sure they'll fly at night as when we released it, it sort of swam around in circles then headed away at a fast clip without flight or submerging. We believed it was totally exhausted from the experience. Pigeon Lake is well know for it's musky population and musky eat birds but not an adult Loon.. I suppose that's why they have the reputation of going for the eyes?
We were upthere for a week and two days later fishing the same area at about 2AM the may fly hatch came in to progress, (a story on its own (we were absolutely saturated with'm.. one got into my ear too and Don had a hell of a time getting the bug out)). I wondered if the Loon knew the hatch was about to happen in this water-brush area of the lake? Oh, as I understood, there are only two mated Loons per lake. But no, the bird was aggressive (terrified) from beginning till end.

Well.. we took the chance sutor, we have to live with ourselves and simply leaving the bird to it's own demise never crossed our minds.

Loons. Baitfish. Loons here in Vermont aren't in any danger as far as I can see. Other than from unscrupulous fishermen.

I don't want to see anything suffer but I have felt for a while that quite a few of them could die and not hurt anything. That was reinforced as I watched a loon at Waterbury Reservoir battling to swallow a 14"+ smallmouth bass. I was hoping it would choke, but apparently not. Loons are more than baitfish eaters- they are gamefish eaters. As long as *we* keep protecting them they will become even more of a nuisance - hopefully not to the extent the cormorants have.

(Side rant: cormorants have stripped vegetation from entire islands on Lake Champlain. USF&W take 'em out with shotguns periodically but with a hundred thousand birds how much damage can a few guys in a boat do? And it's expensive. So it makes the mind very confused when you approach an island with a sign on the shore that prohibits anyone from landing on the island "to protect the nesting birds." Eh???)

I suppose loons are nice to look at but a couple of loons can predate entire bodies of water clean of fish, then they move to another pond or lake and do the same thing. That happens on the many smaller stocked ponds here in Vermont. And then when they are bored I guess they eat 14" smallmouth.

Loons go south for the winter, generally wintering over around the mouth of the Mississippi. Perhaps your loons took a wrong turn or got caught in weather.

I saved that green heron when I was 8 or 10 yrs old. I now realize I was interfereing w nature being nature. I'll always help linewrapped, or hooked birds if I can. I'm no expert but I believe it is illegal to "help" alot of birds because they are federally protected like Seagulls? I am compelled to try if It's possible and I guess one day I might be fined for doing what I think is right. I have the pleasure of seeing Bald Eagles, Osprey, Great Blue and other Herons, Kingfishers, Loons etc. Every time I fish my local lakes. It is part of the enjoyment of being out on the water. Last fall my dad and I watched an Immature (but still huge) Bald Eagle chase an Osprey for 15 mins.!! It was a sight to see as the Eagle looked like he wanted to kill the Osprey, not just chase it away. They were diveing and turning furiously up in the sky and back down through the treetops back and forth and the Eagle would not break off the chase. They finally left the area and I wonder the Ospreys fate:eek: The young Eagle had obviously learned to fly very well for his age and matched the smaller bird turn for quick turn staying right on it's tail. I wish I had videoed the struggle. I also have seen mature Great Blue Herons fight over territory I assume, and they are tough fighters and peck, jump and beat each other w their large wings. This was at a point on the lake. One was fishing the bank when the other soared by and landed around the bend. It stepped quickly towards the other bird around the corner and suprised the fishing bird and the fight was on!! Only a minute or so and the fishing bird high tailed it somewhere else.

Actually I had posted the thread to find out if others may have used the same method to locate fish successfully? Or perhaps the Loons actually frightened-off the bait fish in the area?

When i've seen them they are allmost always around deeper areas of the lake or near drop offs where the shad here school in large ##s. I can't imagine 1 or 2 Loons chasing the schools away as much as the schools of bass that follow them, and I have seen bass herd them against drop offs and ultimately towards the surface where they can be seen jumping and being smashed by the bass in a surface frenzy sometimes. I believe If you see Loons, your fishing in the right spot!

Hey man, agreed. I would have done the same thing. Although, I am happy to know now that I'd have to watch out for my remaining eye.
