I'm looking for a gasket that goes between the lower unit and the exhaust housing. it is leaking slightly and wanted to stop it. how big of a deal is it to replace this?
if i cant find the gasket can i make one from gasket paper?
black rubber or cork?
suggestions?

Thanks.

No gasket there. Never was - that's why you can't find one.

I second that. There was never a gasket made for that application. If you want to stop water from leaking, you can apply a light coat of gasket sealer there. There really isn't any point though, because there are several drain holes around the lower unit to let the water out anyway. So, bottom line is: Let it all leak out.:D

Ditto. There is a long, thin, "spaghetti gasket" btwn the top and bottom halves of the gear case housing, but that requires removing the lower unit and separating the skeg. Is that what you mean? Otherwise, the lower unit is supposed to be flooded with water which will then drain out when you remove the engine from the water.

hmmmm...can't really see it in the pics, try checking your DRAIN and VENT screws are tight and have good gaskets. Just a guess.

Lower unit oil can't get way up there. That is fuel coming down from the powerhead.

As FR noted, you're oil mess is unburned fuel/oil mix from the powerhead. In moderation, it is quite normal. If it's pouring out, you may have an issue up top (stuck float, bad powerhead seals, etc.)

Re: Where to buy a lower unit gasket?

What I and many other mechanics have used as recommended by various OMC representatives was "OMC Adhesive". It was recommended to use this substance between the metal to metal surfaces of the lower unit to exhaust housing (form a bead on top of the lower unit).

Also recommended to be used on the O Rings on the propshaft carriers, the O Rings between water pump impeller housings and the impeller plate, spaghetti seal that is used between the crankcase halves of various engine models, and many other areas too numerous to be mentioned here.

NOTE: OMC Adhesive is now Bombardier 3M Product #847
