Guy,

Where do you find good used outboards. I looked on this site but they are all new outboards. I am looking for a Good used 175hp Merc. I have checked Craigslist, ebay,etc....all the usual haunts but don't really find just the outboards by themselves.

Any suggestions?

Re: Where to Buy Good Used Outboards

Ya beat me to it !

I've got the same thought, and DAILY am scoping every site that has used motors.

I just don't know that I could do a rebuild myself correctly on a blown powerhead, and ALWAYS have in my mind that motors for sale are being sold for a REASON, and I'm not knowledgable-enough to find the problem before the purchase.

I have a good-running 135HP Mariner, fortunately, with 135PSI of compression per cylinder when checked at the end of last season; but I really would like to step up to a 200HP for my boat (that's what it's rated for), but am skeptical and can't seem to find what I'm looking for.

I'll keep an eye on THIS thread!

I received some VERY GOOD advice from the guys at MarFab, unfortunately it came about one year too late for me.."when purchasing a used OB you might want to figure in the cost of a rebuild too"

Tis the season to buy.. Tell your local dealers you've got cash and are looking for a decent motor. Tell them what you're willing to pay and they can then offer that to another customer who's thinking of repowering.

If a dealer can offer a trade-in value that's near or equal to the resale value or just be able to tell a potential buyer that they already have a buyer for their old motor it often swings the deal in their favor. Most dealers would relish the thought of being able to offer that.

It works, I've done it twice now.

Re: Where to Buy Good Used Outboards

didn't see anything at tcoutboards.com--the website is gone i guess. It kinda gives you a 411 page of other places to shop for outboards. i saw one places that had some tahutsu's but nothing above 115hp? wow.....

What the best thing i have seen so far is just buying an older boat thats pretty beat up and then bring the motor back to life or hope that there isn't a whole lot wrong with the current motor.

I saw a few adds for 1997-2001 model boats in the $5000 range that had 175-200hp motors on the back of them. I guess the best thing might be to change out motors with the higher 175 and place my 120hp on the boat and turn back around and sell it for say $3500 or $4000. I dunno??

It is interesting on going about getting a nice used motor--but i know it can be done....

and if anyone is interested i have a 1997- 120hp Force(runs in the 49-52mph range--on an 18ft Nitro) with excellent compression of about 140-145 on all cyclinders if you want to trade + cash...

Let me know what you guys find out.

try tcoutboard.com; that's "Twin Cities Outboard", as I did a search and found the correct site. However, they don't have much in the way of larger motors, and most of the motors are old and/or "collectible".
Let me know what you guys find out.

This is great advice! I would further add if you did find one from a dealer he should offer you some type of warranty after he checks it out. Maybe 30 days.

I would then bring it to another dealer during the warranty period and have them also go through it thoroughly.

Also see if your dealer can offer you some type of extended warranty.

One repair on a 175 is going to whack you big time.

Worse yet, you may be sidelined for much of the season waiting for parts, if it's not checked out properly.
