I am looking to repower my 19-6 aquasport with a Single ~130hp four stroke OB. I am currently running dual 50hp johnson 2 strokes. I have kept then running for quite some time, and after 3 rebuilds and countless repairs, I am ready to move on to a single RELIABLE outboard. I think I little more power would be good, so I am going to set up a little bit.

Anyway where can I find this motor. I am not going to buy it locally(dealer is a schister) and have seen some decent deals online. Some good deals here on iboats, some on Ebay, and I remember seeing a sire that sold one year old hondas that outfitters in alaska for one or two seasons then they buy new motors. I cant remember where I saw these alaska motors, but if someone knows what I am reffering to please help. Where is the cheapest source of newer 4 strokes?

Also anyone have any suggestions on brands to avoid or look for?

Thanks very much
T

honestly, 99% of time its not the motors fault.

id be willing to wager some cash on the fact that you just may do it again, with your single "reliable" motor.

geez, i always thought that JOHNSONS were the reliable ones. i gues i better throw away my 30 year old motors that still run like a dream, start every time on first pull even after sitting for months.

oh well, guess we were wrong this whole time.sheesh :p

myoutboards- I would say it is not the motors fault also, but maybe not 99% of the time. I guess it was not the motors fault the 1st time when the VRO oil injection gave out and blew a quarter size hole in the top of the piston. The cause of rebuild #2 I would blame on the motor, though. The pressed in pin that holds the connecting rod to the piston, worked its way back out, and "machined" a 5/8" wide grove about an 1/8" deep into the side of the cylinder wall causing loss of compression.

With that said I do see where you are coming from. I have a early 70s johnson 6hp that I use on my small duck boat that runs sweat. Fires up after only a couple pulls after sitting all spring and summer.

I love these motors when they run good, but it seems to be always something going wrong. And having a pair of outboards is nice from a saftey stand point, but keeping 2 motors tuned and in sink and bothing running is becoming more and more of a pain in the butt. I just want to fish! And a 4 stroke just seems to be the ticket.

But I dont mean to dog on the OMC family, I like all my Johnson outboards.

Any other advise is appreciated, thanks every one I will check out those sites listed above.

Tony

As for the 50s I may be willing to get rid of them, but only if I can find a good buy on a new motor. So I wouldn't count on me having them for sale for at least a few months.

I always also plug Elvin's web site. He has some great pricing on Nissan/ Tohatsu 2 strokes in the 115, 120, & 140 hp range. You can expect to see the direct injected (TLDI) low emissions version of these outboards in the not too distant future.

Elvin is at http://www.internetoutboards.com

I have found his pricing to be quite a bit less than anyplace else for new outboards. The Nissan/ Tohatsu models in that horsepower range have been aroudn for quite a long time and have a good reputation.

Tony when you get ready to sell them advertise them here so we can all have a crack at them. Thanks.
