I am trying to get my computer to communicate with the engine and it will not. I have the cable attached to a plug on the starboard side of the engine just behind the pdp. It has the same color wires but it was not unused or free. It was connected but it only had one wire cumming out of it instead of the three. The cable I have is evinrude so I am guessing the wires have the correct color code. Right now it will not connect and i believe the EMM is bad. The com port selects and it tries to connect but no luck.

You need to find the triangular Deutsch connector on the top of the engine, at least that's where on my E-Tecs. There are always three active conductors ... it's a bi-directional serial connection and it only connects one way.

Sounds like you could use an OEM shop manual, or you wouldn't be asking.

i have the oem shop manual but it does not cover the use of the the software or where to attach the cable. I will look again but the shop has no directions on how to use the soft ware.

there are a number of connectors that this will plug into. All of them are currently plugged into another connector but then so is the one i believe the cable is supposed to attach to. I do not have one that is unused or capped off. that is why i ask.

The manual does say that the software will come with directions so... I opened the software and went to the help menu. It gives me directions on how to test the connector and my connection. Thanks for the thought on going to the manual. Never would have looked. Will see if i have a good connection or if the emm is not communicating.

It will only communicate with the ig sw 'on'. BTW, never owned or worked on a Ficht. The E-Tec shop manual has a lot of diag sw info. My E-Tecs had only one vacant Deutsch connector, so there was no mystery as to the where part.

did a loop back test and it was good then i checked the ground on the engine harness and it was good. Gonna hook the laptop up one more time (charged the batt all night on the boat) then the emm is off to dfi to see if that is the problem.

took the Emm off and will send it out tomorrow. should know in a few days if that is the issue. I think i have ruled out everything else. theconnector is the same as four others on that engine. i have the lower cowling off so the trim switch is unpluged. It will plug right in to that connector too. dont ask how i know that.

talked to the dfi guys today. They will let me know when they look at it. He did seem to think it was odd that the injectors and the spark were both out. Will let you know what they say.

good news and bad news. The guys from dfi said the EMM was fine. Saved me some money but I have a problem with it powering up on the engine. Here I go again going to go back through circuits and try to find what I missed.

Try to trace out the wire in your service manual in the wiring diagrams that powers up the EMM. One thing I found on some FICHTs is when the factory made the wiring harness they crimped the terminal on the wire but it was on the outer wire insulation only and not making contact with the actual wire inside.

Check output from fuse box to ECM. You may have voltage, but not enough Amps to run ignition and injectors.

What is likely overlooked is corrosion inside the external 20 amp fuse holder that feeds 12 volts to the EMM. It is not one of the 7 10 amp fuses inside the power distribution panel, but is on a black wire with a snap type cap over it. Look for it using the service manual wiring diagram.

Found the wire diagram and i will look it over. The 20 amp holder is corroded. I replaced the fuse but it may be I need to replace the holder as well. I was not aware that that was the fuse for the 12 volt EMM feed. I am supposed to get the EMM back today and i will try to steal some time this week end. Re doing the kitchen right now so my stuff takes a back seat. Someone did not do a good job of cleaning this engine. the folks at dfi said 9 out of 10 times the wire harness is the problem.
