Where to fill tilt cylinder?

Somebody should be able to help with this, I have looked everywhere, even my repair manual has no info on the manual tilt.

I have a 91 40hp w/ manual "tilt assist". The guy that owned it before me drained the fluid because the cable broke. When I get the cable replaced, where do I fill it and how much? There are 3 plugs in it. One on the bottom, one in the middle and one on the top. Which one gets the fluid and what position does the motor need to be in when filling? Thanks for the help.

Re: Where to fill tilt cylinder?

So filling the manual tilt cylinder is done in the same manner as the power tilt cylinder?

Re: Where to fill tilt cylinder?

Ok...Once again I am proved to be too hasty in some decisions. I had looked in the Table of Contents of my book and seen that it only listed "Power Trim & Tilt" After going into that section to research from the above post I see that they actually included the assist cylinder in there. Thanks for the help and I think it will cover what I need. If it doesn't.....I'll be back. lol

Re: Where to fill tilt cylinder?

Ok...Neither of those setups look like what I am working with. I went out and took some pictures. They aren't that good since it's dark, but maybe it will help. My Clymer manual states that they are not serviceable AT ALL, but that can't be right becuase I have had a few people tell me it could be refilled with fluid, only I was planning on going to power tilt at the time so I didn't pay much attention. It tells you not to drain them either, but I KNOW that has been done. Anywho, here are the pics. I am thinking the middle plug that is by the cable would be the place to add fluid.

Yeah, I see. (I like that site BTW) I am just too stubborn and have been working on things for too long to believe a hyrdraulic cylinder like that is unserviceable (especially since it has those "service ports" or whatever in it) I guess I will mess around with it and let you all know if I find out anything too interesting. The only thing that was wrong with it before he drained the fluid was the cable broke and he was too dang cheap to spend the $70 "they" want for it. Now it looks like it might cost $600 to fix it just because the guy that owned it before me drained the oil? That's ridiculous. I'll use a dowel rod to hold the motor up first. (or maybe buy a power tild and trim setup if I'm feeling rich)

It is also "pressurized" like the gas struts on car hoods and trunk lids. That part might be hard to recreate.

Re: Where to fill tilt cylinder?

OK, I found it in the 1990 40-55HP service manual. It is called a "Touch-Trim Unit"

It says that "No detail parts are available..... Do not attempt to service or disassemble any part of the hydraulic unit."

Someone will have the cylinder. If you want the pages send me a PM with your e-mail and I will scan them and e-mail to you. Super Bowl tomorrow, might be Monday.

For under 600 you could put tilt and trim on it.They make several aftermarket units too..

Re: Where to fill tilt cylinder?

Thanks for the offer ezeke, but it sounds like about the same manual I have. Ok, so if I were to give up and put a CMC tilt unit on there I would still have to find a way to lock the engine down, wouldn't I? If so, that would mean I would need to fix the setup I have and then purchase the power tilt setup. I don't really care whether I have the power tilt or not, I just want what I have to work right. I haven't tried it yet, but I am betting that if I put it in reverse my motor is going to try and climb right up out of the water. What is the "right" way to fix this? Should I just buy a new manual cylinder, or maybe the factory power tilt setup?
