i figured being near the end of the season there would be all kinds of boats for sale. i am looking for a 2-3 year old boat. 18-21 ft bowrider. i scan craiglist and Ebay every day.Mostly older stuff. Boat trader is the same handful of dealers selling the same boats. i tried this site and a bunch of others but im not seeing much. Tried a few dealers and most have older stuff or brand new. wheres the best place to look?

You're on the right track. And one thing you should learn is what all these boats are being sold for. Call up some of the older ads just to see what the bottom line was. Thats all about being informed, and knowing a deal from a rip off. Just be patient. Still into the season and people are still enjoying their boats right now, so hang on a little longer.
Also, Kijiji is a newer site run by ebay that has a boat section. Give that a shot as well. Good luck!

I found my boat on www.yachtworld.com www.boats.com is also good. These are brokered listings but the seller pays the commission. They have lots of listings and there are great deals to be had. I got a great deal on a 4 year old boat. Be sure to have a certfied marine survey. Some of these boats come wih transferable warranties. Good luck.

Here in Chesapeake land, I found my Searay by just driving around. It was sitting on the side of the road for sale.
Every other yard hereabouts has a boat in it. Many have been sitting quite a while and can be had easily.

You may want to consider a new boat, it may cost less than the used one. A two or three year old boat was purchased "new" when the market was much better than today, and at a higher price than todays market will bare. Chaparral has 15% to 20% discounts right now in addition to a cash rebates and they are very solid highly rated boats. Chaparral has been hurt by the southeast drought (they are made in Georgia) and by high fuel prices as have all manufacturers.

Check out thehulltruth.com there are some decent listings there as well. I'm in the same "boat" as you, craigslist everyday along with all the other usuals. Try using craigshelper.com with that, you can do multiple searches in different cities for the same thing without having to click each city. It will save your search too.

Re: where to find used boats?

I "shopped" for two years before buying. In MN there is no sales tax on boat sales from private parties except on the trailer which is a subjective dollar amount (the trailer portion of the sale is how much I say). There is always sales tax on used or new boats from a dealer on both the boat and trailer (but not on the boat for brokerage boats). This makes the decision easier as the private party was the way to go for me to save a bunch of money plus you usually get their gear which can be a couple thousand dollars of stuff. In any event take a look at this site. It searches both Craigs list and Ebay but is specifically for boats and shows some historic listings that sold or expired. http://www.jaxed.com/cgi-bin/mash.cgi?cat=cpboat

For some reason, I discovered the boats on Craigslist have owners with more realistice pricing expectations than the used sites this comes from someone who bought my last two cars off ebay. Also, the guy whom I purchased my Chaparral from paid cash when he bought it new. Lots of buyers are upside down on their loans and just can not sell as low as the market value is I discovered.

Good luck

Shopping some weeks ago (early August), I could not get a new smaller Chaparral in MN to save my life. All Sold out of in stock models. Other premium boat brand dealers also had very few to no stock available. Lots of Glastron's, Bayliners, and Stingray's available though.

Though it was strange so bought used but again far and few.

I know that you already mentioned it, but Craigslist is my favorite! I purchased both of my vehicles & my boat on craigslist. I have also sold many things too!

I guess that being patient is the big thing to remember even though it's hard sometimes.

Hey there lets fish, I have another post about this craigslist boat. I have already seen it and will take it out on Tuesday. This will be my second craigslist boat, but it's taken a lot of looking and chasing some illegitimate ads to find the good ones. Here's a link:

wow, that surprises me. I'm north of atlanta and the local dealer still has some 2007's on the yard. Check below.....

I have a 2001 Chaparral 280 SSi (jumbo bowrider) with twin 5.0l Mercs. I have owned searays and one Mariah and think Chaparral has a very good product.

Re: where to find used boats?

Lets Fish,

Craigslist, the local papers, and the local marinas (take a look around Lake Hoptacong) have the used boats and you can go see them in person. I would stay away from ebay, unless you can go see the boat.

Also ask friends, post signs at the local food store bulletin board, diner, etc.

The first boat I bought was found by a guy I work with who brought me an add from the local 7-11. Let your friends and co workers know you are looking.

The second boat I bought came from Craigslist. I drove almost 3 hours from north NJ to south NJ to buy a boat I found on Craigslist after searching back a few weeks. Turns out it never sold, and I got it at a little less than the asking price. I talked to the guy on the phone, told him I was making the 3 hour trip, and would he hold it for me regardless of who showed up before me. He did, and lucky for me, no one else beat me to it. I paid cash ($1875, so not a big risk), took the title and documents, and came back a few days later to tow it home.

So it pays to talk, make plans, make your intentions known, be prepared to change hitch ball sizes if needed (2" and 1 7/8" are common).

Good luck.
