I am from central Georgie and I know a little about pond fishing, but now I live in savannah and want to get into some offshore fishing. I want to know where to go and what kind of rigs to use and what kind of bait. I have A 23' walkaround boat. I trust it and think it is capable of going out at least 20 miles. Any input can help. Thanks

It depends on what type of fishing your prefer. Do you like to bottom fish or troll for pelagics? If you like to drop bottom rigs I would suggest the Carolina rig or fishfinder rig. Thie FF is just a double-hook bottom rig with a bank sinker although there are many variations. I use circle hooks with cut mullet, shrimp, squid, etc. Try and locate wrecks and bottom structure.

If you want to troll you can buy prerigged ballyhoo and you can pick up some different colored/stlyes of skirts to put over the wire leader. You can rig your own ballyhoo and save some bucks, but for starting out the prerigged is a good way to go.

Depending on what you want to troll for will depend on where to troll. A good place to start is to head east and look for any of these types of activity, bait hitting the top of the water, for birds diving on the water, for any kind of floating debris and weedlines, a color change in the water and or a tempature change of 1 degree or more. Also look for rips (where water is smooth and rippley side by side and can be seen that way for several hundred yards to miles. Never pass up even the smallest peice of debris like a cooler lid. I have picked up nice dolphin off of small debris.

When trolling I like to put out 4 lines. My two outside lines I drop way back about 100 to 150 yards sometimes further. The two inside lines I put out just past the propwash (about 100 feet in back out the boat). Troll at different speeds untill you pick up something. (between 4knts to 9knts). I also like trolling diagnial with the swells. If the seas are flat troll in a S pattern, that will change the speed of your baits.

There are many many ways to troll and bottom fish and lots of different baits and techniques to use. Subscribe to a saltwater fishing magazine and you will pick up lots of good info.

Hope this helps. If you have any more questions just ask.

Good luck and tight lines.
