Where to get Marine Plywood

Howdy All,

I'm new to the board and need some help. I have an old Alumacraft that needs new deck boards. As I understand, 3/4" marine plywood is what I should use for the decking. I read about one restoration where the person painted both sides of the marine ply with epoxy, then glued the carpet to that. I am guessing that is the way to go. My first problem is finding marine plywood. I live in north eastern Illinois and called several hardwood suppliers around here but was told that they do not carry marine plywood.

If I am going about this wrong, or if there is a better way, please let me know.

I would also appreciate any suggestions as to where I might be able to find some marine plywood.

Thanks for taking time to read this.

any reputable lumber yard can order you what you need. even HD and L. most lumber yards do not stock it. you can also use AC exterior ply and coat it the same, will last a long time, that's what is on the outside of your house.

yup, local yard probably won't keep a supply but they get re-stocked all the time and should easily be able to get some put on the next truck headed their way. shouldn't take more than a day or three at the most.

I don't know of a supplier in your area, but I will offer some input since I just went through what you're about to.

You may try asking for "CCA" treated plywood. This is the same chemical that's used in Marine Plywood, and is OK to use w/ aluminum. It was used in all pressure treated lumber until outlawed in 2003, with exceptions granted for marine and farm use. So, it's still in production for those limited applications.

The new ACQ and MCQ works just as well, and contains no arsenic. It has copper in it though as the preservative, so it must be insulated from the aluminum in the boat, as the

Standard plywood has more voids than "Marine Grade" and isn't pre-dried. It may have more plys, also than standard plywood. But, it costs about 3X more.

For me, in my aluminum boat, I used standard 1/2" MCQ from Home Depot at $27/sheet. It was pretty dry already. For my transom, the ACQ 3/4" I got from Lowes was wet, and I dried it for 2 months in the garage. Check the link in my signature if you're interested.
