i have a 57 evinrude big twin that needs ONE crucial part. it is a little plastic cog that cracked in half. it goes on the end of the rod that you turn to control the throtle. any ideas on where i could find one of these?

I carved one for my 28hp out of a stainless bolt. I guess it's supposed to shear and to protect the throttle arm from getting bent but I was having trouble finding one that wasn't at least half-broken.

that's not a bad idea. the problem is that the shape of the metal rod is round with one side flat. any idea how i could get that sort of hole?

If I'm picturing what you're describing right, it sounds a little different from what I made. Mine was round, about 1" long with both ends flattened to fit the slot in the sproket thing that the throttle cable turns. I simply used a hacksaw to cut the flats in both ends. A grinder probably would have been faster.
In retrospect, a peice of aluminum rod would have made much more sense to start with. I suspect it was probably a Sunday when I made it and I already had the bolt.

But I bet you could get it from one of the places Rick has above for like $2.

I need that same part! Mine is missing too but I never knew it was plastic, is it the same as the opposite one that it mates with?
If it is I can take a mould off the remaining one and cast a new one in epoxy, should be at least as good as the original if not better. The diagram in my parts catalogue doesn't show the part in any detail

Mine on my '56' 30 was broke on one side. I measured the width of the slot and used 2, 3/16 drift pins. Drilled 2 holes in what was left of the plastic insert and gently tapped in the drift pins. Much better now without all the slop and still has room to flex alittle.
