i have a 50HP mercury Mariner 1988. The engine runs fine (since I adjusted the idle speed up) for the first few hour. Then if I let it sit for a while and go to turn it back on (say 15 minutes). It starts a little harder and sputters and dies when going into gear. My brother thinks I have a bad fuel line, the bulb is soft most of the time so the valve may be shot. I would like to replace the whole line but don't know where to get the end connectors. I can't find one that says it works for the older 1988 mercury, they all say 1998 and newer. Also, if I wanted to use the old fittings, where do I get the little hose clamps and are they hard to put on. Finally, I have a Mercury, 1/4" bayonet style connector on my fuel tank side, which is very hard to insert and quarter turn. Is that unusual? Sorry for all the questions.

To me it sounds like it is ur fuel pump just had the same problem on my 115hp 88 outboard. I replaced the fuel line first going to the cheap route and it did not solve the problem. Soon has i changed out the fuel pump was running like a champ. I found all my parts for the motor at a old outboard salvage yard by my house. These motors are hard to find parts for as they stopped making most of the pieces. Hope this helps you a little bit, but check ur fuel pump for leaks bad seal etc

Here is a parts listing for your engine, Tyhe next time you have it running and encounter the problem, have somebody with you to pump the bulb when you think it is going to quit and see if it keeps running. If so, replace the diaphram kit and make sure that the filter is cleaned or replaced as well.

thanks for the link. But I am not sure I see where the connector is for the gas line to the gas tank. I am hoping it's not the fuel pump because I just spent $500 having a guy fix everything he thought was wrong with the engine. When I squeeze the bulb it never really gets firm so I am hoping it's that. Also the line has some dry rot on it.

OK, I just got off the line with iboats parts department and they don't sell the hose or connectors for the older pre-1998 mercury mariner motors. Does anyone know where to get one of these hose assemblies?

Thanks, I called up my local marine dealer and he said I should just buy the replacement bulb and hose and put back on the two end connectors. He said he has a 8' replacement hose for $12 and he has some kind of zip ties for re-attaching the old connectors on the hose. Supposedly the ties are made for gas lines. Not sure what these are and I may have not described them properly.

I agree with your dealer, just get the bulb with the hose and use your old connectors. Zip ties will work just fine. There is not much pressure in the hose (actually I guess it would be negative pressure as the fuel pump is pulling and not pushing) so no worry about leaks.

You can try Discountmarinemart.com...also try to just google.. 1988 Mercury fuel line assembly..You might be surprised..I did this, it led me to four stores..2 on Ebay, seeling new products, and 2 regular boat repair stores...
At DisCountMarine , they only sell to dealers, but if they have the part, they will find you a store to go to buy it in your city. Thats how I ended up getting my part...Went to the shop, gave them the part number, they called and order it, had it the next day.....
