I don't care where you buy a used motor, you are still gambling on it being a "good" one.

Professional boat mechanics can't tell you if a used motor is good... I'm assuming your definition of good means it is in fine working order...

It might start today and be dead tomorrow. Even a new motor can do that, but at least you would have a warranty!

The only way to tell if it's "good" or not is to run it. Unless you plan on doing the labor yourself, if u get a bad one you're out of luck. There are companies that offer remans, but I have no experience with them. What are u looking for?

mercruiser 140 3.0L.....the block on mine is cracked and junk along iwth the exhaust manifolds.... How about finding a block? I found one on ebay but its bored .030 and the cost of pistons would be expensive wouldn't it?

Re: where to get used motor?

The 3 liters normally outlive the boats in which they are installed.

It takes a lot of neglect to kill one, so they are pretty plentiful on the used maket as the boat usually dies before the engine.

craigslist can be a good source.

You could just look for a core and have it rebuilt.

East Central Illinois....if anyone knows where I can get either a block or complete engine Mercruiser 140 please let me know............also another question would be do all the years of 140' fit to the same outboard unit?? MY boat is a 1971 Larson and the serial number comes from liek 1967 (engine #). Would a new engine still fit on the same outboard part of my 1971 Larson?
