Hi,

I'm a business owner with the responsibility of hiring honest people with good moral character.

I would like to begin implementing a background check before I hire new staff. I would like to check criminal records.

Does anyone here have any experience with any of the on-line sources for background checks? I would have a driver's license number, SS#, Date of Birth, and current address.

There's a lot of places where you can give them your credit card # online...and perform a check.

Your experiences with this would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks for reading, Chuck

As a municipal employee we use our own police dept. I'm pretty sure we also do it for the public. as for on the internet when ever you do a phone search ads pop up for enhanced searches. Try doing that, I would let my insurance co. handle it through this method you will not be charged with bias or dicrimination. It is a very gray line your dealing with "what is your right to know vs The employees right to privacy" I believe the law for the most part comes down on the employees side most times.

personally, I would not go to one of the online places that advertises with popups like that. You don't know who your giving these other people's info to, they could in turn do whatever they wanted with it.

I'd go to local PD and ask who THEY recommend if they won't do it for you. I'd rather the local boys get the $.

I wouldn't put my SS# out on the internet, would you? I understand your concerns. It amazes me that people will steal from you, get fired, and get another job where they steal again and over and over. I'm all for background checks, I just don't give my SS# out if I'm not sure of it being secure. Good luck.

Another thought, you will need them to sign a waiver, otherwise you WILL be sued for invasion of privacy.

I would interview former employers and personal references. You get into shady ethical and legal waters beyond that.

I am hireing again this week and i can tell you right NOW you will rarely get anything beyond YES they worked here.

There has become to much fear about getting sued if you say anything negitive about someone you have fired.

We will sort through the resumes to look at the work history.

Then we may make some calls to see if they worked there.

Then setup meetings to get a feel for what there like in person.

You have to be carefull we ended up with an escaped convict from NJ with perfect forged ID

We figured it out after he did a nother Armed robbery on payday he is back in jail but it was pretty scary

tommays

I'm sure potential employees wouldn't want you putting their ssn on the internet, even if it is on a website of a company that does investigations.

Alot of state websites are able to run background checks. Usually you can check the sex offender database for free.

Ken

Unfortunately it's almost universal policy for large companies to limit reference info on former employees to dates employed and perhaps position and salary. Most won't allow current employees to provide ANY feedback on former employees, even if it's positive. CYA for the company...

Check with your county. If a potential employee has a local criminal record they'd have to tell you. Criminal history is a matter of public record. That is how the fee for service gets their info.

Re: Where to go for Internet Background Checks?

To my understanding, anyone that has a criminal record is a public record for anyone to see. Just check with your local police station. Some business even do a credit history check as well.

When I was a supervisor, I always went to the PD with the SSN's. It was a free service, but there was a charge if it was printed out. It worked well for me, I came close to hiring someone who beat someone to death. Not the kind a person I wanted to work for me. He was PO'd that I checked his record, but he knew he couldn't do anything about it. That is a good reason to stay out of trouble.

BTW, if anything that was on their record that was esponged by the courts will not be shown on their record. Personaly, I wouldn't trust entering anyones data on the internet. Just tooo much of a chance on a liability. Good Luck

Insurance companies and alot of business owners are also using credit checks, equifax and trans union. I really don't have any idea on how in depth you want to go or what type of business you have but are you digging to qualify an applicant or disqualify the applicant.

I can tell you that in Texas it is illegal for a law enforcement agency to run a criminal history on anybody. There is a sytem through the department of public safety to do it but not your local PD or Sheriffs Office. It does happen, and all of the time, but its still illegal.

You need a signed release authorizing the check.... a company called "Factual Data" can handle the release and the check for you. Their name is their web address with a dot com.

My company contracts with them for employment background checks, their info is superb, it includes criminal history.

My bad, I should have worded in my response that Ohio allows access to criminal records. Could be why so much dirt is dug up on our politicians.

The factual data check: employment history, credit history, criminal record.
