If the motor is pumping, you will see a spray of water coming out of the bypass port on the rear of the motor tower.

If you really feel the need for a tell tale, you have to find a good place at the top of the block or cyl. head to drill & tap for the hose barb fitting. Some of the motors had a pre drilled hole that was plugged. Others may have a boss that can be drilled. Just be sure you pick a spot that won't hurt the engine. Route the hose down to the motor pan & find a location that will allow you to drill through the pan, leaving a hole at about a 30 degree angle, so the hose will shoot water out at the side - not straight down. Use a diameter of 1/8 for the outlet so you don't deplete the cooling water too fast.

A pretty healthy spray at that. No need for a tell-tale on these old motors.

In 1959, nobody had a tell-tale except Mercury and Elgin. Well, OK don't jump me, I can think of a couple more. The point is, in 2009, everybody figures they have to have one.

The best insurance against cooling failure is to know darn well that you have a good water pump in there. Then you don't have to worry about it.

Or, you can rig up a tell tale and spend your boating day with your head screwed around backward to watch the squirt. Chances are slim to zero that you will be looking at it when the pump self-destructs anyway. When that happens, you have about 5 seconds to shut it down. So be sure to check it every 5 seconds or less.
