Alright, I've decided like another memebr suggested going with a water pressure gauge. I picked up the telefex gauge kit. Will my issue is where the heck is the input hose to hook this thing into. I've read that you dno't hook this up to the tell tale. Well my problem is where is the hose or whateve I need to hook up the piping too. This is a 1979 55 HP johnson with the console and steering. They state their is a piece of tubing to connect into, pput the only tubing I can see is the tubing for the tell tale stream. If someone can guide my frustrated eyes in the area to put this would be great. Or some kind of picture of the approxiamate location of this very well hidden tube m,ay be. I'm just hoping I don't have to start taking a bunch of stuff off.

On that motor you just T into the overboard line. There should be a T in the kit. Cut the line and insert the T, hose from the T to the gauge.

It's the one you mentioned in your post.

When you run the motor there should be a stream of water coming out a nipple on the starboard side. That nipple has a hose connected to it. That's the hose you mentioned you saw. That's the one you T into.

Okay, just making sure, because when I said it was a piece of tubing, it was the tell tale one that appears to come out of the engine and shoots the hot water out. I was under the assumption that you wanted to gauge it before it went into the engine, becasue going through the tell tale would only be open whe nthe thermostat is working. Just making sure I don't cut the wrong thing. So to make sure I've got it right in reverse of what I'm seeing, I have the nipple going through the lower fairing to the right side of the engine that goes to the bottom of the engine into a rectangular looking plate. So I would put the T into that and run my connection to the gauge. Is that nipple that shoots water out the side not the tell tale stream that everyone referes too?

There will be water coming out of that hose whether the t-stat is open or not - regardless of what some other people on the forum say. If you follow that hose from the nipple back it goes to a fitting in the top of the water jacket cover over the exhaust. When you start the motor water will come out of that tube when the block fills up. It'll continue to flow even if the T-stat is closed indicating the water pump is working.
