I have a 1986 Mariner 25HP electric start. The starter is not working, have to have it rebuilt.

I took the boat out this past weekend and got it fired up by using the pull rope. It takes a small shot of starter fluid to get it started. It takes it a little bit to "warm" up. After the warm up it idles good but once I put it in gear it dies under the load. I had my daughter hit it with a small amount of starter fluid as it was dying and can get it to run for a little while when its in gear and under the load of pushing the boat.

Where should I start making the repairs? would it be a carb issue or spark issue? or...? I think I will try new plugs first.

Thanks for your help!

If supplementing the fuel gets it to run, what seems likely??

Why waste time and bux fixing stuff that ain't broke, Spavinaw?? Overhaul the fuel system. Leave the plugs alone; they are working.

Your starter. 3 out of 5 starters that are replaced or rebuilt were not broke. Tell us why you believe your starter needs to be rebuilt.

Also.....

Ditch the can of starter fluid. It is a throw-back to diesels in the days before glow plugs. Using ether to get it running or keep it running is starving the engine for oil, and can damage engines whether they be 2 or 4 stroke.

Most Starters the drag or won't turn do that because of a build-up of the dust from the brushes. It keeps the brushes from moving against the armature resulting in a loss of current through the starter. Pop the end of the starter off, clean out your brushes and you'll probably be good to go.
