Where to start?

I just picked up two 1960 Evinrude outboards. One is a 5.5hp and the other a 10. I have a service a manual and have learned a little. Neither one has seen water in years. There was even a mouse home in one. The 10hp was used in salt water, deduced by the amout of salt corrision and salt water from the lower unit. I have new plugs but the magneto coils are cracked and covered with salt. Should I replace all the seals in the whole outboard? Should I disassemble, clean, and reassemble? My questions are vague and unorganized, but for a novice that needs advice, I guess I am looking for a good place to start.

Welcome to iboats.com. :p

First, make sure they turn over by hand with the plugs out.If not, you probably have internal problems.
Give each cyclinder a shot of light oil, and do a compression test.
Check the lower units. Lower units 101

if the lower units are ready, remove, clean, re-install the carbs.
CARBS 101

And good luck.

Re: Where to start?

Compression tested okay but a lot of build up. I read about a good cleaner on another post. The lower unit is another story. Talk about bad seals, after the water drained out the peanut butter started dropping out. No chunks of metal though. Can I flush it out with fresh water before replacing the gaskets and fresh lube? I have also read about stubborn bolts, in my case of corrision they just seem to break off with little pressure. Heating and cooling doesn't seem to help the white powder. Any suggestions on the bolts?

nvg8r,

I would flush out the L/U's with someting like WD-40. Replace the fill/drain plug gaskets, refill and give it a whirl. You might get lucky.

I definetely think you will need water pumps in both.

A shot of WD-40 down the carb, throats won't hurt either. Do it with the carb. butterflys wide open.

You're probabaly going to find that the carbs. are gummed up, however rebuilding them is relatively easy and parts are readily available, including floats.

The coils may or may not still function. Cracking of the outer coating was quite common. They will probably need repalcement, down the road.

Good luck, we'll be here.
