where's my impellar on a tohatsu 5hp M5A2-S

hiya,
i managed to split the bottom end by releasing the intake pipe, but i can't seem to find an impellar? do you know where it is? its not anywhere in the gear box or on the prop side? if i start her up and put a hoes pipe on the intake pipe then it pumps water great, i was wondering if this type of engine will only pump when its in the sea and in gear, cos the prop would direct the water flow up the intake pipe???? if you know what i mean?? any help would be great cos this little engine has loads of life left in it, many thanks dan

I know zero about that motor, but if it is anything like my Honda 8HP, the impeller is inside a housing above the lower unit, mounted around the shaft that sticks straight up from the lower unit toward the engine. I think, from your description, you may be looking inside the area where the prop shaft is. If you pull the LU, and see the shaft that sticks straight up, and there's a (probably plastic, maybe metal?) housing bolted down to the top surface, with the vertical shaft coming out of it, that is probably the water pump (impeller housing), with the rubber impeller inside it.

For your sake, though, I hope someone who actually knows that unit comments.

hello,
no theres nothing in the lower unit, just the gear link rod and the drive shaft.
the only other thing there is an intake pipe which is directed at the prop, i can only think that when its in gear, the prop turns and forces water up the in take??? if that makes any sence? or the impellar must be up the top at the engine side sucking water up from the lower intake pipe, i just didn't want to strip the block down to not find anything?

Seems an old model, probably located inside prop housing, remove prop and check, newer models have impeller located inside LU.

No water pump in the 5A2...It is an air cooled POS Send me your email address and and will send you the parts PDF for it. Nothing is available for it though.

Any luck getting that manual?
I recently got an M5A2-S and got worried. Which brought me here.
Even though she started straight up, I couldn't spot a tell-tale... Suppose the air cooling thing could explain that
