Where's my voltage regulator?

In my shop manual, it seems to tell me to take off the flywheel to get to the voltage regulator on
a '94 Johnson 88spl. I'm pretty sure that I see it (round with three wires) on the right side of the
engine, close to the electrical block. If it's easy to get to, I would like to order of the internet and
put it in myself. Can somebody steer me in the right direction? You guy's always do. Thanks

rk2fish , If what you are seeing is round in the center and a two bolt flange I believe it is in fact your voltage regulator .You can trace its input wires back to the stator under flywheel to confirm.I believe they are yellow/yellow with gray stripe.Output is red
Check these sites
out:

About $36.00

What you have is a rectifier, not a regulator. It "rectifies" (changes) the A.C. voltage created by the stator and changes it to D.C. volts. It can be ez'ly tested to see if it's working correctly. What kind of problems are you having to believe yours is malfunctioning??? Not enough charging??? What is the voltage at the battery terminals??

Re: Where's my voltage regulator?

Thanks for the replys. I was planning on getting the part on Outboardparts.com, but
I will also check out the other site. My problem is that the voltage to the battery doesn't
change whether or not the engine is running. I haven't checked anything else since my
shop manual isn't very clear to me. Thanks

Re: Where's my voltage regulator?

rk2fish,If your boat is not equipped with a volt meter you can check the output of the rectifier by connecting volt meter to red lead from rectifier to terminal while throttling carb linkage to 2500 rpms while running on hose and seeing if voltage rises. The amount it rises from line voltage will vary with battery state of charge.Touch one lead to red terminal and the other to good engine ground.Compare that reading to what you are reading at battery to assure you have good connections on charge wire. You can also check output by reading amperage "inline" on red wire between rec and solenoid.Digital volt meter is a lot easier to see a rise in voltage from 12 to say 13 than needle type while throttling rpms. Before condemning rec make certain that the two yellow leads from stator to rec are reading a/c voltage.Somewhere between 16 and 20 should be good.
